From this article [story.news.yahoo.com] citing a new study by something called the World Internet Project:

The typical Internet user -- far from being a geek -- shuns television and actively socializes with friends, a study on surfing habits said Wednesday.

and

Instead, the typical Internet user is an avid reader of books and spends more time engaged in social activities than the non-user, it says. And, television viewing is down among some Internet users by as much as five hours per week compared with Net abstainers, the study added.

Well, I can only speak for myself that aside from weekend sports, the only TV I ever watch now is ... ahem ... Survivor. (ssshhhhhh!) Oh, and I do try to catch Curb Your Enthusiasm but the first couple episodes this season don't seem as good as last year.

Anyway, I identify fully with the study results and while I was never ashamed to be called a "geek" by others, am proud to now say I'm normal (for lack of a better word!).

It amazes me how popular Survivor was in the US when I moved here. The show had been running for years in Sweden, and some started getting sick of it. Still running in Sweden though :)

I am seriously thinking of eliminating my TV. There are so many channels and movies playing all the time, that I think it is a waste of time. Curb your enthusiasm is good and a few others, but I'd rather be learning on the net, or out in the sun.

I tried that. It don't work.

Tells me something 'bout Microsystems - maybe this sun is a microbe. Also says about java - where presumably this sun is. (Sounds like a nice place though). Then it says Solaris - which must be a swear word in some language. But it does get worse and I get thesun.co.uk....ugh

Maybe I need to search some more.

Yep, very little TV nowadays for me - just a nice movie on a Friday night with a glass (bottle) of wine :)

Hmmmmm.....TV is that a big box with moving pictures and sound.

I am sure that went out the window the other day...

Anyway I think watching a good DVD with a bottle of wine is more fun.

Nowadays their are too many channels, too many adverts and nothing unique!

Do you guys in the U.S ever get to see a british sitcom called "Red Dwarf"?

a british sitcom called "Red Dwarf"?

I saw the whole series via Public Television a few years back - one of my favorites, even my wife would watch it, because she loved "Butterpat Head".

What about the book? Ever read it?

Edit: looking things up on the -ahem- internet, I see there are now several: [jupitermining.com...]

I only read the first one (Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers) but can highly recommend it. Especially if you haven't seen the tv series.

There being rerun in the Uk at the moment, lost the plot a bit in the later series, but the first 3 were classics. All the books are worth reading.

See, we are all still geeks!

Red Dwarf

Very pleased to say that while in England I had both Pot Noodle and various vindaloos... I feel much more cultured now. ;) Back home now with my spiffy new propeller beanie. Life is good.

(PS - No, Pot Noodle is not *quite* the same as Cup Noodle, for those who might wonder. I thought it would be, but it's not.)

(PPS - I did not, however, see any police call boxes... as long as we're on the subject of geeky BBC sci-fi shows. Where'd the call boxes go?)

Stolen by aliens from another time and place.
