What would you do if someone was willing to pay $30,000 for your site?

I just want all of your point of views at this situation:

Lets say you have a big portal site , and you programmed it.
It took about 5 months to do it, and its a really really big project, you've worked damn hard on it and it may even have a chance of being "The next Yahoo".
When you've finished it, and just started it, you meat this guy who wants to buy it off you for about $30,000USD.
But for you, the portal is worth more than $30,000. Its all your hardwork, and besides, if it becomes popular, you have the chance of being "The next Yahoo". But then again on the other hand, if its not "The next Yahoo", all your hardwork will go in the rubbish bin.

So will you sell it, or will you decide to keep it, take the chances and see if has a chance of being "The Next Yahoo"

I'm not sure if I would sell it for $30,000. That's making about $6000 for each month of hard work. I know some affiliates that make more than this per month doing nothing.

If you DO want to sell it, try bumping it up to at least $40,000 ;) If he wants it bad enough and has a master plan for the site he wouldn't think twice about paying an extra 10k.

Lets look at the numbers.

If you spent 5 months building the site:

If you work 22 days a month and 8 hours a day that is
880 working hours. Selling the site for 30.000 US (about 24320 Euro), it would be an hourly salary of only 34 US$.

If you truly belive that your hard work is only worth 34 US$ then sell.

If you only worked on the site in your sparetime maybe only 150 hours total, it would mean an hourly salary of 200 US$. I value my time around 130 US$ so I would sell in a heartbeat, you could always build another site.

If you sell try to force to party to buy some services from you in the future. The best of luck.

I think you should sell it, but I do agree that you shouldn't take the offering price. Any business man worth his salt will offer well below what something is worth. It's up to you to make sure he doesn't get a great deal. :)

Well, that depends on what you want. The money could be invested in making more sites, if that's what you want. You could pay other people to do the boring bits for you, and the next sites you make would take less time.

Sid, keep in mind depending on your tax status and income level 30K could wind up looking more like 20K.

Offer to sell it for $30,000 but keep a 15% - 20% stake, so if you site ever makes it big time your not crying in your beer!

I sold it! - bagrained it to 40 gran :) :) :)
I'll use the 40 gran for the invesment of a new "Search Engine", buy some new hardware etc. and its gonna rock :)
If I didn't sell it and decided to have 2 sites (2 invesments) I would fail in both of them!
But I'm glad I made the right choice.

Good Deal Sid, unless your site (an SE i guess) used some cutting edge technology (like Google's PR) i guess its the best deal for you!.

If its just a crawler and some sort of basic indexing/retrieving system i dont understand why the guy paid 40k - i can develop using offshore programmers for maybe 10k!

What I think made it so special for the buyer is the following:
1) Scalability - It could handle masses of content as well as members/users on its database without having to slowdown.
2) Technology - The technology was great, it had: Mail, News (similar to Google News), Stocks, Weather and a User management system - You'd have to login to do stuff, just like Yahoo :)
3) Customizablity - Any user could change/customize it the way he/she needs.
4) Stability - It wouldn't blast off suddenly just because 100 members are online at the same time!
5) Management - The person who manages it can do almost whatever they want with it, everything is customizable.
6) Speed - The speed is super speed no matter what size the database is.
7) Differentiality - It was definately different to other portals!

So sounds to me Sid that, basically, you've built a nice CMS geared around portal use?

That's marketable in it's own right - is that what you've sold, or have you retained the ability to re-use the code?
