Hallo to evceryone it's my first time that i write to a forum.
I have a pc with 2 SATA disk of 80GB each and i installed windows xp on them. I put them on RAID 0.I also have an 80GB IDE hard disk After 2 days i saw a message on my pc that tells:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
System32\Drivers\isapnp.sys

I tried to get on recovery console in order to expand this file from the cab but when i got in the recovery console my 2 sata disks were not recognised and the only disk that i could see was the IDE disk.

Can anyone help me and tell me how can i see my sata disk on recovery console in order then to expand the isapnp.sys on the windows directory in order to solve the problem, because as everyone i want to avoid the format.
The other thought that i made is to install a windows partition on the IDE disk and then through windows move the files from the sata and reconfigure them from the beggining. Also when i tried to reinstall windows on the sata i didn't have an option to leave current changes and continue with installation of windows in order to overwright windows and try to solve the problem but only there was the option of format the sata disk.

Thanks for hearing me. Also is that caused because of a virus or it's windows problem. I have windows XP with SP1a.

P.S. does the sata disks have a problem with ntfs or it's better to format them with fat32. i believe that this is not as good as ntfs.

I appreciate any kind of advice!

Welcome to WW Aramis,

You may be better off asking that question on a dedicated techie board given the nature of it :)

Seeing as you can see the IDE drive, have you tried setting your SATA drive up on an IDE cable (if the drive is compatible), disabling SATA in the BIOS and seeing if it will fire up? If so you'll be able to fix the offending file.

You say it happened after a couple of days - did you load any other software on the machine, like graphics drivers or anything?

I've not come across that problem before so off the top of my head I'm sorry I can't be more help.

Good luck,

2odd...

For all practical purposes SATA drives are treated as SCSI drives and when using SATA you need to install the drivers DURING the Windows installation, not after. SATAs don't have any problem with the NT File System. They like it very much. But if you had FAT32 you could boot from a floppy disk and reinstall the SATA drivers.

(Mind you there are NT floppy boot utilities around allowing you to boot into and NTFS from a floppy disk. I've got one somewhere so if you are unable to find anything - sticky me)

The other thought that i made is to install a windows partition on the IDE disk and then through windows move the files from the sata and reconfigure them from the beggining

You would need to be a bit clearer in your explanation. You don't INSTALL a windows partition, you create it. What do you mean by "reconfiguring" files?

Also, if the SATA was in RAID, you could have lost the RAID information i.e. the array was reset, or lost. Go into your RAID BIOS and reconfigure your RAID array.

thanks everyone about helping me with my problem. I manage to use the SATA disks on recovery concole after i unpluged the IDE Disk. I don't have a problem with the raid is ok.
But when i check the disks on reocvery concole with "chkdsk /p/r" it gave me a message that i have a lot of errors on my disk, so i believe that the 2 disks have bad sectors. i tried to make another installation on windows but when is performing disk check before in opder then to continue with installation, it stucks at 75% so i resulted that my disks have bad blocks.
In order to solve thit problem i will try to install a partition of the windows in the IDE disk and then take a backup of my files in order not to loose them. And i will return the disks to back because and take to others because i still have the guranty.
Do you believe that this will work and i wont loose my files?
And what is the best way to configure my sata disks. RAID 0, RAID 1 or use them separate?

Thanks again for helping me!

As someone recovering from a raid 0 crash, can't say that I'll do that again... :( Sure it's fast, but when one drive crashes - you burn. At least with raid 1 you have two copies of everything - so if one drive bites the dust, you still have your goodies.

Welcome to WW.

aramis, please do take the trouble to proof read your posts. I'd love to help but I'm finding it very painful understanding what you are trying to get across.
