> the act was typical of the man
I'd love to read about some of his other typical acts! Polar bear wrestling? Quick hikes across to Moscow when supplies run low.

The Icelandic people descends from the toughest and wildest of the vikings that dominated large parts of Europe. You can read about some of them in the Icelandic sagas.
The mentioned ship is named after one of the most famous of these vikings: a viking chief who is said to be the first European to visit America.

Nope, Erik the Red "only" discovered Greenland, it was his son Leif who went on to America.

I might say that geographically (though not politically) Greenland is an American island. But the truth is that I actually MEANT continental America. Of course you're right. How embarassing to be corrected by a non-Scandinavian. :(

>non-Scandinavian
If this comforts you, part of my family is from Scotland, so I must have at least one or two drops of Scandinavian blood ;).
And before anyone comes and says Scotland is not part of Scandinavia, I know that, but I also know that the vikings were very present there.
