Been thinking of a new top of the line machine for several months. 3-Ghz seems to be about the fastest clock speed available, and has been for a long time. Understand that's about top-out for Pentium 4s.

What's next? I can wait longer if there's going to be a performance jump around the corner.

It is a pretty safe bet, that by Feb 1, 2004, the same computer system will be 25-35% cheaper than it is right now.

There hasn't been too much noise by intel about big speed boosts coming soon or cheap.

There is always going to be a performance jump around the corner. ;-)

If you look at it now, six months ago, a year from now - technology always moves forward. You can easily get caught up in waiting for the next big thing, only to hear about the next bigger thing once it's available.

If you need it now, buy it now.

Yeah, should have mentioned that I'm aware that prices will certainly drift lower on the current stuff.

That's what I'm wondering about: New chips, new breakthru technology. Are we at a plateau for a time? Certainly has looked that way for the past 6 months. Very quiet.

I remember when Windows 95's introduction was a major media event with techies camped out all night to get the first copies. Time was, each new Pentium upgrade was like the premiere of Gone With The Wind.

It was meant to be provocative. I haven't had a good online scrap for ages. I'm getting my Mac-buster boxing gloves on.
