I ran out of shaving cream 2wks ago and thought I'd see how a beard suited me....

Anyone had any odd facial hair experiments or can offer tips and advice on being furry?

I'm not even sure it's growing right, I'm 32 but didn't even need to shave regularly till I was 24 ;)

one tip, when you get fed up with it, have a very sharp razor, I let my stubble grow for about 6 weeks till I got fed up with it, but man it hurts taking it off

I haven't shaved all summer....when it gets too long I just use a buzzer to give the "5 O'Clock Shadow" look. I love it.....shaving is one of the worst chores. The girlfriend made a large mistake telling me she liked it...I'll never pick up a razor again.

Until 1 year ago, I had a chin-strap for about 4 years........

I'm in a year-long facial hair experiment. Basically it consists of letting my hair grow to a reasonable sized beard, then cutting it with the shortest blade of my hair clippers, then letting it grow again. I swear I haven't used a razor since before last Christmas. :)

When I first started though, my 'tache grew quicker than all the other hair, and it did not suit me. ;)

IMHO, being furry is the way forward. - check out this range [images.google.com]

Whenever I shaved off my face fuzz my girlfriend of the time always made me grow it again. Didn't matter which girlfriend, the story was always the same.

No point in me fighting it, I must have a really revolting chin under there somewhere - not looked for about 10 years, don't plan on risking it either.

Tip: get your self a really good set of electric hair clippers - the sort the barber uses with spacers and everything. Those cheap plastic beard trimmers are a real waste of money.

I've been doing this for about 5-6 months as well, quite like not having to shave every day. I agree with the sharp razor, but make sure it isn't a brand new razor - and give it a trim with some good hair clippers before you go at it with the razor, otherwise you'll end up in a world of pain...

Hmm... last time i have been shaved is prob 15 years ago ...
... i cut my hairs (face + head) every couple of weeks to 3 mm length - once around the head. :)

You think you've got problems Nick. When I passed 35 I had to start shaving my ears too.

Hmm. Perhaps I should have kept that quiet...

I find the best compromise now from both a sartorial and time-saving perspective is a number one all the way round. The furry golf ball look.

A few years ago I did some front-stage security work at a rock concert. One of the bouncers with me there had a shaved head and a thin goatee about 6 inches long and platted. It's taken me all these years to emulate the look.

Watch out for the 'itchy stage' Nick. It kicks in about a couple of weeks in.

>>had to start shaving my ears too

I hear ya, ppg, I hear ya.

I have blond hair and random places on my face that don't grow hair. I have always been to scared to see what it looks like.

Thats what I want, but with a bell on the end.

It should stop me catching birds in the garden

<hand raised> Hands up whose missus doesn't like stubble?</hand raised> I like wearing the "I forgot to shave for a few days" beard - but that has to come off if I want to......

(can't discuss the finer points but I think you get the message ;) )

I've been sporting a beard for almost 20 years now on and off. Since I can grow a full beard in less than two weeks, I tend to shave it off completely every 6-8 weeks to perform exfoliation (your skin renews itself approximately every 28 days).

I'll sometimes go a month without the beard just for the heck of it. Many people comment that I look 10 years younger without it. So, I'll make sure I have it on when I turn 50 so I can shave it off and look 40!

I've always used a pair of Oster T-Edgers and a Wahl Groomsman for the maintenance. Every other day I have to clean the neck and cheek lines to give that clean sharp edged look. It's a 20-30 minute process and it can get tedious over time. Sometimes I just don't want to clean up and shave everything off. Since it grows back within 10 days, it's no biggy.

P.S. I always keep a tight beard and stache. Run the Wahl Groomsman with length attachment through the beard at least once a week to keep length to a minimum. Keeps it looking clean and tames those gray hairs that like to go south while all the other colors are going north. ;)

When you age past 40 hair that falls out on top of your head is replaced by hair sprouting in all manner of other unwelcome places.

I'm currently working on a comb-over employing 3 new sources of hair: Hair growing on my ears, my newly bushy eyebrows and nasal hair.

I last saw my sheared face in the very early 80's and last caught a glimpse of my chin early in 86. Can't think of any good reason to make a major change now.

I seem to be fairly 'all over' except for this really odd bit beneath my mouth and above my chin (top part of chin) there' a 1inch gap that has no hair whatsoever.

saying that though, i think that's common?

5 O'Clock Shadow

This is the hard to obtain look that male models and actors can pull off but most other people (i.e. me) just look like they haven't shaved for three days. Think the guy in the Gillette ads before he has a shave and Bruce Willis in any of the Die Hard movies.

My GF can't stand it when it is at the 5 o'clock shadow stage - she says it gives her red marks when I kiss her.

Btw - I'm surprised there aren't any girls chiming in on this. <ducks> ;)

Hey Webwork, I see you're "slumming" from Supporters. :)

By the way, I just use tweezers to yank out my nose hairs. Just wanted to let everyone know how tough I am. :)

They don't like to talk about unwanted hair or female pattern baldness - and who can blame them. :)

Mine too, when will they ever learn? :)

I assume everyone will be displaying their designer stubble at PubCon this year then? ;)

Oh, I let my beard go. I've let it go for about... 23 years. 24 now, I think. It's coming in nicely, but unevenly... Tweezers keep that in line, usually.
You think you're tough, lawman?
I yank out nose hairs with tweezers when I really, really, really need to wake up.
I also yank out knuckle hairs with tweezers because knuckle hairs are really, really gross. I do my toes, too, if I'm bored and feel macho. (Makes people's eyes water just to talk about it. Go ahead, try it, it doesn't hurt so much the fifteenth time.)
Stray eyebrow hairs-- bam! Tweezers. Sideburns getting too uppity? Tweezers. Chin hairs? Tweezers. I'm freaking hardcore with those tweezers. But sometimes, you just gotta put the tweezers down... One day, I was bored, and absentmindedly started using the tweezers on one of my legs. Man... it s*cks to be temporarily OCD. I had to hide the tweezers.

I also experimented with letting my leg hair grow, on the topic of hair. College, a bored roommate, a dare. It wasn't so bad for me, because I'm blond, but she looked like a gorilla. So I got no comments on my hirsute state as long as I was with her. Heh heh heh. That's the secret.
But, the current boyfriend claims it would be disgusting if I tried to go all hippie again, though I know for sure he wouldn't freaking notice unless I mentioned it. This winter I might try it again and see how long it takes him to say anything.

Hey, guys, you asked. Well, edit_g, YOU asked.

>They don't like to talk about
Speak for yourself! Heh heh, I can talk about ANYTHING. :D Much to the dismay of those around me.

Ouch - tweezering is not the preferred method for hair removal in my household - She applies the stick and rip technique - painful but a shed load quicker!

Nick_W, you need to be creative in your beard trimming routine. If you have patches here and there, you work around them. You develop your main beard lines working around the areas that are problematic. Once you get a nice outline, any patchy spots sort of blend right in.

Do something different! Design it. Make it look different from all the others. I've received more compliments on the way I trim my beard than anything else, well, almost!

By the way, there is a point in growth where the stubble no longer feels like sandpaper and softens up. That is the best stage.

yep I guess its friday

I am rolling into the goatee stage again. It is starting to get cooler now so I need to keep the chin warm. Who knows it may even last a while. Since I shave my head all the time the only hairstyle experimentation i get to do is with the old facial follicles.

People think I look mean with the goatee it seems. So I don't usually keep it for too long but who knows.

My experiment was to see how long I could go with out shaving or getting a haircut before someone mentioned anything to me at my current place of employement. 6 months and no one said anything. I got sick of it and let it go. I was told "you clean up nicely".

I personally hate shaving, ever since I had a wonderful skin infection due to it. So now I try and shave once a week, and that is just my cheeks and neck. I use clippers on everything else.

Just for the record I am letting what is left of my hair grow out again...about 2 months into it. About 3 more I will look like some sort of pyschopathic indie rocker (c:. I will keep the beard trimed this time though.
