Johnny Cash, a towering figure in American music spanning country, rock and folk and known worldwide as "The Man in Black," has died, according to hospital officials in Nashville, Tenn. He was 71.

I've never been a real country music fan but songs like Ghostrider are legendary ... and he's been a legend at lifetime.

Ah thats sad, I've been a fan of the man in black for many years. Did anyone see the footage of his concert in San Quentin prison? Moving stuff.

I'll be singing 'Fulsom Prison Blues' to myself for the rest of the day in tribute.

If it were not for Johnny, we would have no metal music. He started the dark rock and country. A true pioneer that was only being relized recently by the mainstream. He will definetly be missed. America and the world has lost one of the greatest music makers of all time.

What a summer this has been. Gregory Peck, Katherine Hepburn, and now Johnny Cash. Life just won't be the same. :(

Yah, what makes me truly sad is the fact that many of them died pretty jung. 71, 68, - that's not thaat old. Pfff ... did they give up or is this just how life goes and ends!? I honestly miss these fellows. The day i've read that Jim Wilson is dead was my worst day this year. I just can't believe it how fast things come and go. Sigh.

i had the good fortune to see johhny cash and the carter family play a show at a local church in 1993.

even though he was older and in poor health he still put on a 3 hour show of country and gospel that was one of the best shows i have ever seen.

I've never been a country fan--more of an alternative rock person, then last year Johnny Cash came out with covers from Depeche Mode (Personal Jesus) and Nine Inch Nails (Hurt). I fell in love with him at that point.

My little alternative rock station that I listen to all day has been playing at least one song an hour of his. I found that quite moving.

Kind eerie having Johnny Cash and John Ritter (whose father was country singer Tex Ritter) die in the same 24 hour period.

Johnny's cover version of Trent Raznor's "Hurt" will live as long as the classics from earlier in his career, I think. Could be the most powerful thing I've ever heard him do.
