Not a knife, but does it cut, tear, mend or weld?

It never could on its own.

Not now, perhaps in the future it will be used in those applications.

Wow that was fast - how did you find it, are you familiar with that type of technology?

Congrats 2oddsox.

And could someone please provide an explanation as to what the thing does? I don't get the text on the page linked to...

:)

Funnily enough I just typed in Google 'the size of a paperclip' and there it was on page two. I'm not sure if that's clever or sad.

It is a small motor that contracts when electricity is applied to it.

It was a very good one werty, would also probably have been a very long one if 2oddsox had not gone that way but concentrated on the gizmo as the rest of us.

So good gizmo and good thinking.

I still cannot believe it shows up for that search...

Read this:
[nanomuscle.com...]

The doll uses NanoMuscle’s miniature motors to create a whole new level of realism in toys. Baby Bright Eyes has large, expressive eyes that silently open, blink, look around, and close in response to the play of a child. NanoMuscle motors allowed the doll’s creators to achieve a level of realism that was previously impossible using existing motor technology. Baby Bright Eyes will be on shelves of major retailers in fall 2003.

NanoMuscle, a developer and manufacturer of silent, powerful, miniature motors will provide the technology behind the eyes of the doll. Compared to conventional electric motors, NanoMuscle’s unique motors are smaller, lighter, and completely silent, thus allowing for a new range of realistic features and motion for toys and robotics. This will be the first consumer application available to the general public using NanoMuscle motors.

SO creepy.
