Explains my trouble getting into sites, I was thinking it was my internet connection.
Wow, they show terrible videos from nyc now, crowded roads, people in elevators, metro, traffic chaos? What's going on? I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything will sort there ...
... allthough many more cities are without power too.
I've got a server in New Jersey, but no problems thankfully.

News reports say many places are gradually coming back online, and there has been little serious trouble apart from some frayed nerves. It's interesting that columbia.edu (in NYC) is now somehow rerouting to a "fail" page with information about the blackout.
On a more serious note what would people have to do if their hosts went down? I was just listening Denver may be off for at least another day.
Does anyone have any recommendations for maintaining a duplicate site (ie in Europe or elsewhere) offline that can be rapidly switched on in such a case?
That being said, no one knows how to party like Clevelanders do. All of the bars (we're in a popular district) have moved their operations outside, and are selling beer and grilling by candlelight. It's absolutely amazing - quite a sight. :)
It's alternately being explained as a lightning strike at a northern New York power plant (which claims there has been no lightning strike), a problem in Canada (which says there is no problem), and a fire in a Pennsylvania plant (which says everything is operating at 100% and they haven't even had a trahscan fire). Truly bizarre. A squirrel probably got stuck in a transformer somewhere. ;-)
Imagine many are watching story on TV...a better medium for this than the web. Very visual.
Was just in Manhattan with the family last week, riding subways, elevators and trains. Really feel for anyone stuck in the train to Yankee stadium in darkness...in the Bronx!
I live 1,000 miles west. Must say NYC looked stupendous last week. Times Square on a Friday night was something to see. Clean. Enormous crowds of teens from around the world.
Rackspace can do this for you. But a simple power outage won't shut them down anyways.
Should Texas and Virginia be wiped out by a nuke I believe they could switch you to their London data center with relative ease. Only issue here is that in such an event I doubt too many people will be buying travel related products ;)

Come live in Florida.....during the summer power outages occur every day....look a black cloud, turn off the grid immediately just incase lightening strikes!
My home office has enough car batteries (UPS's) to power a Scandinavian country for a week....Makes the problems of living in the UK in '79 look like small fry!
Site down. Power's back on but something's wrong with the server so the site is still down. It's gonna be a long, long day. :(
