Got to go to training for a week by myself in Orlando

How to pass the free time?

My company decided I need to go get some more .Net training. They are sending me to Orlando for a week. The problem is I have noone else in the company going with me. :( This thing is for 5 days. I guess I am going to write a lot of content with the free time I have after training each day.

What do you do when you have to go out of town for a while and don't know anyone there?

Go to bars, see local tourist spots, have dinner in nice restaurents on the company's tab.

In short go and relax... Just because you don't know anyone there is no excuse to sit in your hotel all evening. On of my previous jobs meant me going away to cities, countries, and even continents where I was the only person I knew.

Learn to enjoy being with yourself just as much as being with others. And at the moment, I think its something which people don't develop, mainly because the media portays being by yourself as being sad. Its not. Its time when when you can go and take as long or as short time eating dinner, seeing what you want to do, doing what you want to do.

Look at it as being a break from your life...

Of course, be careful, and watch out.

Have fun!

Head down to Treasure Island. I was there about a week ago and it is the best!
Have fun!

BTW, eat at Gator's... oh and if you smoke, there really are no smoking bars at all anymore since July.

Hey Korkus,

Orlando is a blast! Whether you're going to Florida by yourself, or with others, you can still have a ball!

Attractions

DisneyLand - If you've never been, it's worth a visit.

Universal Studios - Two thumbs up, lots to see and do. Bring a camera. Check out Twister, Earthquake and make sure you ride Back to the Future.

Islands of Adverture - If you only have time for one theme park, this is the one. The Hulk, Dueling Dragons, Spider-man and Jurassic Park. This place is packed with excellent rides (if you're a fan of thrill rides)

Shopping

There are more outlet malls in Orlando than anywhere else I've ever seen. There is one in particular, near SeaWorld, that has a great selection of clothes, sunglasses and sports equipment. It's outdoors and worth a visit.

Food and Drink

Whenever we visit, we always eat at Cracker Barrel (we don't have them up here in Canada). I would recommend CityWalk (at Univeral Studios), Downtown Disney (Wolfgang Puck Café) and Pointe Orlando. Be sure to eat at Bob Marleys restaurant if you visit CityWalk.

Kennedy Space Center

I found this really interesting and a great way to spend a few hours. You get up close and personal with some pretty massive rockets and shuttles.

Golf

There are a whack of outstanding courses in and around Disney. Mind you, if you don't golf, this probably wouldn't interest you. ;)

Okay, I'd better stop, it sounds like I work for the city of Orlando now. :)

It doesn't really matter if you're by yourself, as long as you enjoy yourself. Go and see as much as you can.

Have fun!

Go see Mickey! I haven't seen him in a few years, and boy, do I miss that mouse :)

If only someone would pay me to be in close proximity to the Mouse (of the Disney sort)... (I am in dire need of a vacation and would go to Orlando at the drop of a hat)

Goodness, where would I begin? Seriously, go visit at least Epcot at WDW - you can do the World Showcase and have a beer from each country. (Mexico, Germany, Norway, China, Japan, Africa, USA, France, UK, Canada) Check out the Fountain of Nations.

Not to mention you could catch La Nouba (Cirque du Soleil) at Downtown Disney - great show, btw.

Hmm, dinner at the California Grill atop the Contemporary resort at WDW (watching the fireworks going off at the Magic Kingdom) would be nice...

For more Disney stuff to do check out wdwig.com aka everything you could want to know about Disney World and more.

I was just in Orlando helping someone move there.
I feel I should warn you that it is apparently the rainy season, as there is a thunderstorm daily.

The days start off beautifully, but by the time you get out of your classes it will probably be pouring with large Orlando-sized rain drops.

Have fun! ;)

Florida in August...hmm...

My only advice is to stay inside where it's air conditioned.

I've been to a number of classes like that before. Most everyone else in the class is in the same boat. Pretty easy to get together with other folks to see the local sites, have dinner, etc.

Bring your portable surge protectors for your notebook if you are going to use phone line dialup. Summer lightning storms in this region are notorious. It took 3 modems in 3 years for me to wake up and finally buy a phone line protector. ;)

If your looking dining and bars which have a more non-tourist (well for the most part) atmosphere, you should head downtown Orlando and just walk around the Church Street Station. This is where a lot of the locals go.

I have to second SlyGuy's recommendation on Universal's Islands of Adventure park. The Hulk - what a coaster! And Spiderman was named the best motion-simulator ride in the country by the Travel Channel. If you're a thrill ride fan, don't miss Islands of Adventure.
