What's the most popular search on the web of ALL TIME?

Not your weekly top search "zeitgeist", I mean of ALL TIME, ever...

Anyone know?

Cause then I plan to make a site about it. :)

Lots of competition will be there yes, since it will be the most searched for thing on the internet...

But I'm up to the SEO challenge.

Not a big Harry Potter fan but according to Google Zeitgeist, Yahoo "buzz", and Lycos 50... It's a hot search.

I just want to know what it's like having millions of visits to your site each day.

note to mods: if you wouldn't mind could you please change the CAPS to lowercase in the title... sorry, didn't mean to yell! :)

Here are a few top searches according to Overture:

computer 2,040,513
harry potter 1,392,223
britney spears 1,231,002
microsoft 948,039
web hosting 464,953
web site 257,493
web 159,758

I don't know what the "web site" people were thinking. And here are just a few of those who instead of reading the new Harry Potter, took to the Web for an answer:

8314 die harry in potter who
5347 die harry potter who
3772 die harry in order phoenix potter who
2916 die harry potter
2771 book die harry in new potter who
2155 5 die harry in potter who
1938 die harry order phoenix potter who
1380 die harry order phoenix potter
1118 character die harry potter
1115 book die harry in potter who

not really surprising (according to overture):

sex: 3,477,237
porn: 1,825,805
free: 988,138
nude: 634,685
online casino: 617,819

You can get a lot of variants from those 5 words (well, online casino is two, but anyhow.)

Um my guess would be words that are probably against the TOS here like s*x, p**o etc...

I know for a few years mp3 was right up there as well.

of all time, I would say "sex"

I am pretty sure over 90% of all males at some time in their life have searched for that on the net.

Probably quite high for the females aswell :)

Doesnt necessarily mean that all of those people actually clicked through to the site, just that they have searched for it, to see what results show.

>>> online casino: 617,819

This is a classic example of Overture's inflated numbers ... This is one of the phrase where webmaster searches are many many times than the actual real searches ... I am pretty sure that the actual Search for "Online Casinos" is less than 200/daily

IMO Sex related phrases are the alltime stars followed by music/celebrity searches

Just because a search phase is popular doesn't mean you should do a site about it. Why:

1) lots of competition
2) you will lose interest in it
3) you should build sites about topics your interested in

actually i can see the challenge there for an SEO - and bearing in mind google's preference for content based over commercial - one may just be in with a chance.

according to Overture

11692822 Yahoo

Try for "money"

It may not be the most searched, but you should be able to make a fortune off affiliate links.

Hmm. Well, of course you'd have to have a PR10. You'd need a very short domain name with Yahoo in it, and I wonder... Yahoo's title bar says "Yahoo!". If yours just said "Yahoo" would that be a higher keyword density? hehe

According to "Analysis of a Large AltaVista Query Log" These are the top. They speculate that applet is due to automated queries.

Talking of Google, overture shows 11340382 searches for that word last month, which I think makes it the biggest from the suggestion tool in terms of numbers...

Bit zeitgeisty admittedly ;)

well i think that Microsoft will probably one of the most popular searches ;) everyone who has microsoft will probably search for something on them, thus everyone will have at one time searched for a microsoft related term, eather to do with bugs, problems, programs, or patches!

I just couldn't do it... Just couldn't bring myself buying a Harry Potter domain name...

I had the whole look of the site planned to... And was going to put Google Adsense on the site.

But I just can't make a site about something I'm not interested in to make money!

Hmm, wonder what else is being searched for alot, that might actually *interest* me...

(Just thinking outloud...) :)

I'd have to say s*x would have to be one of the most reliable perennial favorites... Harry Potter may have earned an enduring place in the annals of children's literature, but s*x really has a much more universal, long-term appeal. Harry's years in the limelight of human interest can be counted on your fingers. You'd have to measure in terms of millenia to accurately track the popularity of s*x... I mean, really! Where would we all be without it? hehehehe

mivox, I know where your mind is... ha ha

if you jump into this category, better to make sure you have good and tight server with port monitors! (if you get rankings) this crowd doesn't play nice always...
