Occasionally I have to use a fake email address to download patches, trial versions, or subscribe to something.

I feel sorry for FredFlinstone@yahoo.com :)

Hmmm, you may not be causing a problem. If you used FredFlintstone that might be more of an issue. ;)

I am afraid that the poor owner of fake@fake.com has a bit of email thanks to me.

I have found "asdf" and variants to be very common fakes in the various lists I run. (Left hand, home keys, QUERTY keyboard.)

For me it is something like dsfug@sidofg.com or ifbfs@iuahfp.com or... you get the idea.

The email server we use here (qmail) allows us to create extension email addresses on the fly - you just use them. No additional configuration required.

So, jake-whatever@mydomain.com is the email address I submit to the site, where "whatever" is the name of the site I submit to. It all filters into the main address, jake@mydomain.com, and I can just block the extension at will.

It also gives you a good idea of who is selling addresses. :)

Use exactly the same thing as bakedjack, and scanning through the email addresses that register on one of my sites it appears lots of people do the same

I can use customizable emails if I want, ala "domain-requiring-my-email@mydomain.com" but some places I just don't have the time/energy/inclination to block or track - but they are places that occasionally require that I re-login (due to expiration/deletion of cookies or whatever)

Download(dot)com is one that springs to mind. That is why I employ an easy-to-remember address (fake@fake.com) for those kind of sites. I don't think i would ever be able to remember zsdsfdd@sdff.com twice.

I occasionally use abuse@<their domain> so that they make my own spam reports for me.

Other than that, I use spamgourmet.com or sneakemail.com if I actually need to get some of the mail.

Lastly, if you're going to put in fake email addresses, and just make them up, please use example.com, or something else that won't matter. (that one is reserved as non-functional). I happen to own a domain that some people like you apparently like to fill in for their fake email addresses. Those insensitive clods mean my mailserver is more busy.

By the way, what's your real email address? I'm thinking of starting to use it whenever I fill in forms.

I know the feeling amoore...

I used to have a domain with a word which comes to mind often when typing in fake email addresses - and I got buckets of spam.

I let the domain go.

Personally I use a@b.com

I just type in afljafj@afldajfd.com or something similar. I try not to use anything that anyone would own.

>please use example.com

I didn't that was a reserved domain name. Thank you for pointing it out. I promise to be less insensitive from now on. :)

yep, rfc 2606 reserves example.com and others for use in documentation and testing.
[rfc-editor.org...]
perhaps foo@domain.invalid would be more appropriate in light of that document, I guess.

That's also good to know when you're posting here so you don't have to use "domain.com", "my-domain.com", "other-domain.com" and other valid domains in your questions and examples. It's somewhat like the 555-xxxx telephone exchange.

I would have thought president@requestingdomain.com would be big. or ceo@ or email@ or info@, I use something similiar, or the standby f**you@requestingdomain.com

I have done the requesting-domain@mydomain alot, say 30 or 40 times and I have yet to get any spam there. It is absolutely amazing. But it's easy to block at the server level....

Just wondering why noone (including me) got the idea of using president@whitehouse.gov. I mean if they got enough spam, maybe they would really do something about it.

foodle@doodle.com is my favorite.

If the form asks for lots of details then I become Ted E. Bear of 123 Nowhere Street in Anytown USA, who is VP of the Foodle Doodle Cookie Company, and the email is tbear@foodledoodle.com.

Hopefully nobody starts using those domains...all my fun would be ended.

heh

bob@bob.com

from the trend i see here, a spammer could probably spot out fake emails by checking to see if both the name and domain are the same. :P

Sometimes I'll do a whois on the domain, and fill in the email of the technical, admin, or billing contacts. Of course, I always remember to check all the 'mail me crap' boxes.

Or if they rhyme. :)
