Hey, when I was a young one I got my kicks riding my bike and climbing trees and stuff. Busting into servers [newscientist.com] was not on the menu.

I have to admit when I was in highschool grade 9 and 10 (14 and 15 years old) thats all we would do at school try to hack teachers passwords, destroying library databases, try to hack servers, and dos attacks, write lame viruses which worked, but the novelty wore off, I guess every teen wants to be rebelious in there own way. But we did that during school time, didnt spend nights trying to graffitti comercial sites.

regards,
Mark

A network admin colleague of mine looks forward to each and every little sniff he gets on our servers. He gets all animated and he won't talk to anyone until he has messed up the lame little 16 year old script kiddie's PC beyond all recognition. Most of them seem to think that nobody would ever think to attack them back (the amateours, that is).

What they little Pr*cks (the bad guys) dont realise is they could be using all that knowledge to make as much money as some of the folks on WW (the good guys)

Its about time these spotty wee nippers, with no friends and no social life got a slap with the reality stick.

Unless they can actually do something good out of hacking. (very few can)

It's not rocket science, script kiddies require the likes of back orifice and subSeven along with others to do malicious harm these dayz.

And am with edit_g if you have the resource/knowledge hit them back where it hurts :)

skiddies, noun.

1. the brown marks found in nappies,
2. the abbreviation for 'script kiddies'

Both pretty much mean the same thing, don't they!

: )

Let's try to keep this from becoming the "Excrement and Body Parts" thread.

"slap with the reality stick" = "hit them back where it hurts" - i think WE should have a competition of our own.

So, stupid question, but how does a non expert website owner protect oneself?

Two ways:

1. Hire an expert.
2. Become an expert.

Not that it was a real threat or anything, you should still keep your guard up against those pesky "hackers".

Most are just children with 0-day exploits for current software. My advice : Don't fix it if it isn't broken. In other words, don't update un-necessarily. Use older software with all necessary security updates.
