Alec Klein's new book on the merger of AOL and Time Warner chronicles one of the most disastrous deals in U.S. history. In the first of three excerpts to be published in The Post, AOL execs spend like crazy on strip joints, hookers and drugs during the company's go-go years.

IT was the logic chain of too much money: Wealth begot parties. Parties begot good times. And good times, on occasion, begot trouble.

That was the case in early 2000 when a handful of AOL business officials took a spontaneous excursion from Dulles to San Francisco on the corporate jet. They called it a "team-building trip."

The destination: The Gold Club topless bar on Howard Street.

Reminds me of a hilarious "letter to the editor" in Albuquerque in response to an article about a local strip joint. Read it a couple years ago.

His point was that other cities had respectable Gentleman's Clubs, while Albuquerque's clubs allowed anyone through the door and played rap music at "boom-box" levels.

Must be the same in Virginia if they have to fly out to San Francisco...

Reminds me of the time I was hanging out at the Santa Monica airport and the Webmasterworld corporate jet pulled in...
