how do you handle updates to your website while you're away

My personal websites are small enough that I don't worry too much about it. I have a news section on one that I normally update daily. When I go away I simply post a notice telling folks I'm on vacation and the news will be refreshed when I get back.

for news sections i can recommend using a blogger-like product (blogger is one, but there are several to choose from) - if you do not have an alternative access by other means.

the advantage is that you can update your site by logging in at a central site and post the news while you are on the move - without having access to anything but the internet.

i use a hole punch to put punched card code into a postcard, and i have an arrangement with my postman that he puts it through the letterbox with the arrow forward and up... that way by sending about 50 postcards a day, i can add a short article from time to time.

more seriously, some parts of some sites automatically update because they are "stealing" from XML streams etc., some sites have multiple/public editors, and for the rest they are never much updated anyway. i kind of think it's good to design a site to stay fresh while you're on holiday - because then you'll have less work to do to keep it fresh when you're at home :D

Vacation - updates - pc's - Naaahhhh.

I find working on the web so intense and consuming that if I don't take time away, I burn out.

Thankfully I discovered that the world doesn't stop if the site doesn't change for a couple of weeks :-)

I take my laptop on any holiday more than a weekend long.... and usually leave my S.O. at home. ;)

Then, I forget to use the laptop while I'm gone anyhow. I suppose if I had a revenue generating site, it might be different though.

Generally don't worry about personal site updates during vacation, but clients are something else... So vacations = checking vmail and email at least once a day and travel with a laptop. But you gotta agree - updating sites from a vacation spot sure beats the alternative.

LOL. When does it happen;-) I am waiting for my friend to get back from his so I can take mine......3 weeks in Mozambique. Clean blue seas, uncrowded beaches, brilliant fishing and a local drink that is +90% alcohol. I will not disclose the name however:-)

Holidays are holidays, us "webbies" work hard and long hours busting our asses for very little thanks, may the holidays remian sacred.

The best Solution to content updates?

PHP/MYSQL and a couple of days of work and you've got yourself a content management system which anyone anywhere could update with about 10 mins instruction. It's what i've done for various client, just remeber to factor in the cost of the system that they'll be coming to you less often for updates.

I confess. In the States, I haul my laptop along and do hotel/motel hookups.

Other countries are another story. There are products that allow you to access your computer from anywhere in the world, but I haven't tried it. Nor have I looked into it in any depth. Nor am I into Wi-fi yet.

One thing I wonder about is - What if your computer freezes and ctrl/alt/delete doesn't work? Is that the end of remote access?

If anyone has any experience with this, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I often go to a place that's off the grid to unplug, and leave "high priority" updates to other people. I need 4-5 days to begin forgetting about work though-- it gets burned into my brain like some basic reflex, kind of like it did with Dr. Manette after years of making shoes in the Bastille.
