It has historical value. I believe the newer versions of this gizmo are far more accurate.

they hit the "ball" which rotates arouynd the pole. through the ammount of rotation the golfer could calculate the distance?

Is the goal to strike it hard enough to send the base flying?

Used to improve your golf swing. When the ball is hit correctly it will rotate around the shaft.

Not sure who won? Perhaps Bird did? (I've never heard of a 'punchball', so I'll concede to Bird if that's an accurate term?)

A punchball is was boxers use in training, but it doesn't normally measure the force of the hit.

I kinda wrestled with the 'exercise' equipment guess. I'm not sure practicing your golf swing would qualify as exercise....
