What period of time....

If you had the choice to live in any time period what period of time would you want to have lived in and Why?

I will go first.

The Old West. There seemed to be a code even among criminals.

I think I'm doing just fine here. Social progress, though a bit unsteady, has taken an overall upward trend throughout history. In most industrialized countries, I have the right to vote and drive... I am not considered property... I can choose my path in life... and it certainly wasn't always that way. OTOH, I'm afraid if I went too far into the future, things would be too ugly to bear.

I don't want to live in a world with any fewer civil rights, or too much more pavement than we've got now. ;)

Seriously though, I would have liked to been around with the hippies. It was a movement that despite what happened it still seemed right and destined to beat the government.

To bad the drugs stuffed it up! Us humans are funny creatures:)

Well, its not a matter of what period, but who you are during that period.

If you were in the old west, it might not have been as much fun if you were a chinese guy.

same thing with roman times. would not have been as fun if you were a slave.

I have to agree with Mivox. I might like to *visit* plenty of other times, just like I might light to *visit* Iran (Or might not, since I don't want to travel w/o my other half.), but I like the march of social progress. I might consider skipping forward if I had credible assurances about the quality of the time I'd land in, but even that's dangerous. After all, you could land in some future analog of the mad dash backwards that was the Middle Ages.

FWIW, What comes to mind is a book I recall from my high school days entitled: "The good old days -- they were terrible!". My step grandfather at the time would wax raspodic at how great the "good old days were" (the depression era for him). That book had a lot of pics at how dismal everyday life was for lots of folks; at least if you compare typical creature comforts then and now.

I'll take now or in the future, when things (and hopefully society) are hopefully more advanced and generally better in most quality of life respects.

To heck with going back to backward eras with backward people and their backward thinking and ways. Others can have them! Watching various programs on The History or The Discovery channels on how things (and society) were in bye gone eras might sway the points of view of some.

Remember the phrase "harsh (or was it nasty?), brutish and short" as a description of life just a few hundred years ago? What was the average life expectancy back then? Most of us would be dead by now (i.e. current chrono. age). Food for thought.

1994. I made a shambles of my personal life, was on the verge of bankruptcy, and tucked my tail and left town.

Doors opened, I was too shook up to analyze the ramifications, so I just walked through. Without going through the gory details, life improved both personally and financially.
