Just noticed the 'Today in history'-feature. Among many others, it says:
1667 - Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter occupies Sheerness, England

Those were the days! It happened during the second Anglo-Dutch war. In the same attack, the Dutch fleet sailed up the Medway, all the way to Chatham. The English fleet lying in Chatham was completely destroyed - except for two ships, which the Dutch took home. One of these was the Royal Charles, the flag ship of the English navy.

The English must have wet their pants when they heard that the enemy got so close to London! The raid certainly gave the Dutch a stronger position during the peace talks in Breda, in July 1667. The two now best known deals in the Breda Treaty were about control over colonies in the Americas: the Dutch gained formal control over Suriname, whereas the English became the legal rulers of Nieuw Amsterdam (or New York, as they had decided to call the place).

okay, back to work now...

On this very day the constitution of the United States was ratified by New Hampshire. This happend in the year of 1788.
