This isn't aimed at anybody in particular, it relates to fora in general.

Who doesn't look at the 'label' of an individual and make a sub-consious judgment?

By label I mean - 'Junior Member'... other fora use 'newby' etc.

So here I am, 46 years old, been involved in marketing for thirty years and internet marketing since '96 - and I'm a junior! I often wonder sometimes when I post, not here, but elsewhere, whether my message is invisible because I haven't got enough numbers attached.

I'm guilty, because I do it too, not ignore, but look at the 'status' and tend to make a judgement - it's wrong I know, but I'm sure I'm not alone.

It's like an incentive system, reward points - the more you post, the higher you climb.

So, 'serialposter' ... hope there isn't anyone called Serialposter if so, it's not you!

So, 'serial poster' spreads himself out with mindless banter, posts in anything going and reaches the sky with super labels and high ranking status.

Is there a danger that a true green newby could look at serialposter's rank and number and think he's some sort of guru?

....never mind, it's nearly the weekend and Monday is a whole new day.

Serialposter, if you are there, I love you!

I look at posts and not number. I honestly only use the status to judge how well a member understands the system as far as posting and other board tasks. Senior members should know how to use sticky mail. Some new members are very knowledgable and discounting their opinions because they are new to the board is not a good idea.

>>46

I'm 13 ;)

Personally I think that if this 'no post count' thing is a way to get people to not focus on post count. The labels should go also, or just have postcount but no label.

We all make judgements on that, I defy anyone to say otherwise, it's just human nature...

<added>Korkus's point about 'whether they know the system' is a validation of mine. Just not the way I'd have though ;)</added>

Edit -> I missed a word and it looked odd!

Very diplomatic korkus2000!

I think the longer you are in the tooth, the less you do judge - but I still feel there are more of us out there who may not admit it.

Topr8, you're right, the numbers have gone!

Because that would invite all sorts of innuendo... :)

Maybe we should each chose our own descriptions. I would stay Junior forever in the hope that everyone would feel sorry for me and give me lots of help.

Yeh, there could be a menu of descriptions.

like;

Lurker, Old but not dead, Learner, Know-all ... Jedi!

Isnt a Jedi just a man with a magic wand pretending to be some sort of fairy? Its a long time since I saw Star Wars but thats how I remembered it. Think I'll stick with 'junior' or 'juniot' as I just mistyped........sounds even more appropriate.

Careful Judge Jeffries, history has a tendancy to repeat itself ... there could be a lynch mob of Jedi folk looking for you.

I seen a system where other members rate you - not a score, but more of a "thumbs up".

Ie, members profile would say, this person has been rated by xx amount of members.

The theory is if someone is particularly halpful, they will have more thumbs up than newer or non freuqent posting members.

I know that doesnt really count for much, but it would be next to impossible to rate members on how much they know or how much experience they have.

I cant speak for anyone else, but I usually take each post as it comes rather than putting anyone faith in how many posts the member has.

Or, when a member reaches xx posts, they get to choose their own title! ;) Still meaningless, but a bit more fun....

That's actually got some milage because you can still control your ranking by improving within the community.

I'm sure when Mr Bush has finished with his title - you too can be The Supreme Ruler Of The World ... but get it quick, there are Jedi's coming!

>>I seen a system where other members rate you

I am not a big fan of a karma system. It usually becomes a popularity system. Post count does not make any choices about who you are. It is cut and dry about your use of the board and should be treated as such.

Agree with Korkus, far too much potential for abuse for my liking...

btw, I seem to remembe Brett saying that the point of having a 'static post count' embedded in each post (which was the original plan) was puely to save an extra 'lookup' per post per thread.

Maybe this isn't quite the social experiment we all think it is...?

Not really. Brett is doing some upgrades. We will just have to wait and see what happens with post counts. I don't know.
