My location in Manitoba is not near the fires. We're smoky but safe. For now ...
Thousands from the north have had to evacuate, though, including some of my cousins.
I've been getting messages of concern, including hearing from friends from decades ago!
Pray for our firefighters, pray for the evacuees, pray for rain.

I'm grateful you're safe. I've read that most of the fires simply are beyond any control and hoped you would get some good rain. Prayers for all, stay safe!

Yes, here is hoping that you and your cousins, AND all the others, can Stay Safe!
By the way, we are now getting your smoke here in eastern Ontario. It is a troubling reminder of what you are fighting. All the Best to you!
(For those not familiar with the geography, eastern Ontario is about three days of comfortable travel by car from central Manitoba.)

Fire: Bad. My apartment building had a roof fire two weeks ago that filled our abode with noxious smoke. Fast work by first responders saved the day, though we were without power or shelter for the rest of the day...

Be safe!

Amidst all the stress there have been some happier stories. When hundreds maybe thousands were passing through Swan River to head south, restaurants and gas stations stayed open 24 hours for a few days. Farmers along the highway opened their yards so drivers could pull in and rest. A conference in Winnipeg was hastily rescheduled in order to free up hotel rooms for evacuees. Top chefs are cooking at massive soup kitchens in Winnipeg.

Like Mr. Rogers said, look for the helpers. People who can't help with the main problem ... the wildfires ... are doing what they can to help around the edges.

Think <NOW> about what you'd take with you if you had to evacuate on short notice. Don't just think it through, make a list, an actual list, and get some of the basics organized. Evacuation would be a time of high stress and thinking ahead would make for smarter decisions about what to grab. .... advice from a woman who packed two left shoes.

My cousins are safe at a relative's summer cottage.

Urk. Definite double-take there, as I reread and realize you didn't say “western” Ontario.

Make sure you have as many cat carriers as you have cats.
