How was your 2023?

No War, Politics and/or such.

Just WebmasterWorld stuff.

You go First!

I'm the closest yet to giving up on AdSense, having been using it since the very start. I'm waiting for the latest changes in 2024 before deciding.

I've spent time exploring AI offerings, and applications, and especially its place in search.

Had a better year than 19-22 that is for sure.
  • Crawled - clawed back into the conference business with two successful conferences..
  • Turned over much to AI - Content and images. Took loads of gfx work and creative work off my plate.
  • Also got much healthier myself (lost 100lbs) which ultimately made work so much easier/better.
  • Site traffic across 7 affiliate sites was down 8-10%, but income was up - go figure.

I think I have spent less time on really new or different content this year than any previous year. Keeping things up to date, but I could say 2023 is my new 'average' year, nowhere near better or worse.

If we interpret “WebmasterWorld stuff” as “stuff related to your website, whatever it may be” ... I spent a goodly chunk of 2023 prepping three count ’em THREE books that came out in 2028 and will hence enter the public domain in two days.

No, I don’t know why this hasn’t happened every year--did nothing yummy come out in 1927, or 1926, or 1925?--but I am stoked.

Same as any other year. Things come up. Things disappear.

About the only benchmark I have is I seem to be outliving all my peers who are dropping right and left. This is what happens when you get "old". :)

While I do operate a site these days, it truly is a hobby site... thus I have to watch what I say regarding all the angst about making money on the web these days. I chose a different path (sans adsense), built it up over 20 years, then sold the biz off when I retired. But...

Webmasterworld every day has been the bright spot for keeping in touch, chuckling over the same old same old, and being amazed from time to time when something new comes along.

That's my year, and I suspect that next year won't be much different (barring war, disease, pestilence or asteroid impact!).

I thought it was a marvelous accomplishment. Still, it's about 10 times more impressive than anything I've done this year.

1928

afaik this is always been the benchmark for kicking the can down the road on copyright expiration.

Steamboat Willie, and hence the Mickey Mouse character.

Careful! Steamboat Willie was black-and-white. If you want to show Mickey in color, make sure not to use the exact shades Disney used, at least not until 2028 (or 2031, depending on whether you go by the first-ever, 1932, or the first publicly released, 1935).

@Lucy --1925?--but I am stoked.--

That is like 100 years next year, ain't it? Do it, Do it, why not? Mickey has nothing on At Home with Crawlers... -Zip, now that we have the Headers..

@tangor --- Things disappear.

True That.

@Brett, I still have not learned the thing you do, Yet.

Anyway.

I, we wish there was MO to WebmasterWorld. Things don't disappear, nor go over a 100. I spent another year to do learning and this is the place where I started in a first place.

Cheers!

I wish incrediBill was here...

US copyright is currently 95 years, counted to the following January 1, so 1925 copyrights went public domain in 2021. (Europe tends to be Author’s Life plus some number, mostly 50 or 70, also counted to the following January 1.)

Two days ago, I did indeed upload three widely assorted titles originally published in 1928. One of the three is a book that has never been out of print--admittedly more readable in dead-tree form, because of its distinctive layout, but still fun to see it online.

How soon can we expect to see a Steamboat Willie slasher movie?

Oh, the horror!

Didn't need g ... one of my regular site reads indicates a Mouse Slasher called "xyz Mouse Trap" (xyz used to not reveal the full title, but take a guess) is already showing pre-release set photos, etc.

Would have been nice that the next MM flick would have been more family instead of dark and dangerous. Might have something to say about today?

My 2023 was mixed.

I have found myself questioning things that used to be accepted logic, like google organic, or google ads.

They both became less certain, than in the past.

And then there was the arrival of AI, which like google before it, is parasitic on ordinary webmaster content! without any permission ..

So I ended 2023 with a lot less certain than I began it..

The road ahead is confusing and there isn't a map, at least not yet!
