Here's an interesting use for sails on a new cargo ship.

A cargo ship fitted with giant, rigid British-designed sails has set out on its maiden voyage.

Shipping firm Cargill, which has chartered the vessel, hopes the technology will help the industry chart a course towards a greener future.

The WindWings sails are designed to cut fuel consumption and therefore shipping's carbon footprint.

Think of the additional cargo they can haul carrying fewer tons of fuel to burn up on the way.. ;)

Indeed, that too. We're coming full circle to the tea clippers, but much larger.

Next step: dig up all those old charts involving trade winds, with their improbable detours like going from Santiago to Buenos Aires via Juan Fernandez, or taking the Pacific route from Australia to England.

More like pedal assist than a solution. One can only travel (at BEST in a friction-less environment) whatever the wind speed is. The ship will still require fuel consumption to make schedules (and also remember: sometimes the wind don't blow!).

<TIC> Not to worry. Soon some young corporate bright light will ask ChatGPT to invent a revolutionary method of Perpetual Motion With Out Wind (PMWOW). </TIC>

RE: Not strictly true.....

I knew it, I knew it... so it is an old news!

From what we know now - it is going to take a good ol Droid to fix the ship and make it go faster when Empire Strikes again.
