"Draw the best picture of a wave with a surfer on it, with firelike sun effects dancing on the peak of the wave. Adjust it as needed to be the best".... there, I just won the competition too. *yawn*
While I'll probably never buy an image online again, or a painting if I can't confirm the artists didn't use AI, I will hire an artist to paint an ocean landscape in the bottom of my pool.
Thankfully, AI only resides online, and I don't.

With this image winning a photo competition, I suspect we need to have a separate contest for AI-generated imagery.
I suspect that we need a new batch of judges rather than new categories. AI art is not done by humans and thus is merely ephemeral oddities, NOT ART.
However, that's not likely to happen as these days it seems humans consider computers and AI to be "all-powerful".
Sigh.

The problem is with the judging of the contest.
For many years I oversaw the judging of an international art contest that was decided by the artists themselves. We survived earthquakes (server failures) and robberies (domain hijacking) but what we didn't survive was the cross over between paintings created by humans and pictures created by computers.
We had categories for Realism, Modern and Digital. Digital started off ok but at times it was hard to tell if the "digital painting" was hand rendered or simply a photograph with a filter applied. So artists needed to post references to other work, and that way the artists judging the entry could look for background and merit in that field.
Photographers argued that there should be a category for Photography, but they already had one in Digital because by then that section was getting mostly photoshopped photos. In any case, despite being good friends with many professional photographers, I personally didn't think think that arranging a scene and photographing it was in the same class as hand painted or sculpted art. In fact most of my photographers agreed that the key to their success laid in "who you know" to get good paying work.
With AI best picture it may be, but where do you see the artist in the work?

Back in the day, I did a lot of photography, mostly for personal pleasure, and had my own dark room. Back then, sans photoshop, the skill was in the eye: lighting, positioning, subject matter, etc. The only corrections you could make were in the developing process, again with the skill being in the eye. Personally, I do not consider modern photography an art or skill as it use to be. Nothing like a 35mm SLR to truly capture the life around you.
