Earlier this week, {late-night comedy host} aired some segments shot at the US's northernmost military base, located in Greenland. This reminded me of my favorite Reader's Digest joke (“favorite” here means “the only one in my life I can even remember”) from the Humor in Uniform section:

A military plane is flying from Point A to Point B on the opposite side of the globe. This necessitates stopping off in Greenland--perhaps even at Thule Air Base, who knows--for refueling. And, perhaps even more importantly, for cleaning out the latrine. The officer in charge of the plane is displeased with the pace of the enlisted man doing said chore, and starts to make threatening noises. The man replies:

“I have no stripes. I’m stationed in Greenland. My job is shoveling $$$$. What, exactly, are you planning to do to me?”

Indeed. My father was stationed at Thule some 70+ years ago, I never heard him say nice things about anything Greenland related except the "Good-bye" part.

This pleases the power elite who love living in Nuuk, Greenland. The more people talk poop about the place the fewer commoners they have to deal with.

The worlds largest concentration of luxury doomsday bunkers is in Greenland. Few are being built there now, apparently the meltic arctic is creating even more desireable and remote places for bunkers.

We should all have such problems.

Actually, I passed through Thule twice, on my way to Alert (northern tip of Ellesmere Island, Canada) and have high praise for the staff and civilian population (Greenlanders) there. The kitchen staff at breakfast and at the USAF mess, the taxi drivers, cleaning staff at the civilian overnighters' quarters, and support staff everywhere were all friendly, cheerful and very helpful. Even their English was pretty good (I don't speak either Danish or the indigenous language). I wouldn't mind going back for a more leisurely visit.

Never been to Nuuk, though. I wonder if any of those doomsday bunkers are for rent.

The kitchen staff at breakfast and at the USAF mess
In my youth, I was told that if for some reason you absolutely must join the military--if, say, it's either enlist or be drafted--choose the Air Force. For two reasons: #1 unlike other branches of the service, it's the officers who go into combat while the enlisted men stay safe on the ground, and #2 the food is better.
