Mozilla to Acquire "Pulse" Team

Mozilla is to acquite the team behind the shuttered business of "Pulse" which was an automated updating tool.

Mozilla chief product officer Steve Teixeira said,

“With Pulse, this is about supplementing the skillsets we have here already as a way to speed up our development efforts. We have a high bar for any acquisition, but if we find teams and technologies with incredible talent that share our mission and vision for the future of the internet, we are absolutely open to pursuing a transaction.”

Personally, if I had a need of similar features on Slack, I'd have just hired the person who wrote the code, not the support staff. I wonder, when are Firefox users going to see ads or pay for features to cover the cost of the "new team"?

If that sounds cynical to you, remember, when geniuses invent a plane it's the cynic who gives you the parachute. No offense to any team members, I don't know who they are, but taking on the entire team of a failed venture, when other companies are laying off massively, suggests it might not be a great idea right now.

Does anyone know why this makes sense for Mozilla?

I have an idea and have written an article about it (unpublished at the moment) but was wondering if anyone else understands why this is important.

I suspect it wants to move into new areas as it sees a connectivity with the connectivity with users and the Mozilla offering - VPN, browser, Pocket, etc.

This opens to the door to creating industry-disruptive products.
