What do you when you are not working on web projects?

Any side stories to share? is it related to your webs? or far from it?

Foo because...

The forum is not as active as in the past, I think there are many reasons for that, like the web becoming a bit more complex (or simple?), it's a new game? perhaps you are TOO busy creating content, or probably you are busy doing something else because you got bored, things are not profitable anymore, you had bad experiences like people stealing your content, or you just moved on and have other more profitable things to do. I've been on some of this situations myself including getting tired of clients not knowing what they want, or thinking they should tell a web developer what and how to do it like telling a painter how to paint a wall, etc.

Perspective? there have been threads of people complaining, specially about profitability and getting hired. I was curious on how creating content involves writing, editing, photography, video editing, tech skills, coding, etc, and I thought at that time "why not focusing on selling one or two of those skills?", like... today fro some of us is way easier to get hired for some writing or coding rather than creating a full project involving all of it. After all those skills altogether made your site, right? things should also be profitable on their own.

Anyway, I know others (via PM) said they moved on to do other things, practical, tangible and non digital things because they wanted to and now they have the time (older, more financially stable, etc). I know the site avoids specifics, but perhaps in general it wouldn't be a problem to talk about the other things we do, or the things that replaced the web work.

I go first: for a while I got tired, bored, and didn't want to deal with client projects, also I got bored working with my websites so I moved a bit apart and started doing woodworking projects for me, I had no specific plans but small things that I made resulted in "can you do one for me?", and so I started doing this and selling to friends, then on FB because a friend of mine shared stuff there, then I felt better because it was not just profitable... I was dealing with tangible stuff and I felt this is what I needed, a break from digital challenges, I needed stuff to hit, break, cut, and hammer. I often wondered if it would be worth it or not to combine both things and sell wood stuff on the web, but I'm not sure about the SEO or that I would want to do this for longer periods. There are other things, but perhaps too specific, probably if the thread grows I'll talk more.

Ive always volunteered in some shape or form all my life, but have just extended that to cover other areas. Volunteering is good for the soul.

My other job? Been a music teacher since 1968. Otherwise I do art/graphics, edit for others, or take "sabbaticals": fishing, hunting, camping, exploring. Whatever moves the heart at the time.

Or take a nap.

Generally stay busy. Fast as the web, it sometimes takes weeks or months for "trends" to make an appearance and I'm not wiling to sit on hands waiting for the revelations.

I have 4 acres of lawns and hedges to maintain. Also walk around a full sized snooker table as often as I can.

But the last 2 months I have been working on a FREE software project. It was extremely intense and a welcome challenge. Waking in the morning with a head full of solutions and things to do kept me going for 10 hours a day. But not being active physically has taken its toll and I now struggle to get up the hill to check the mail.

Being winter nothing grows much so it needs less attention. But I do plan to walk the table some more.

For about 20 years I had 12.6 acres with two small ponds large enough to keep stocked with minnows, catfish and blue gills ... situated on salt-grass prairie topping clay loam. Keeping that manicured required specialized equipment and two full days work every week. Bought as an investment against city growth that growth took a bit longer to happen than I would have liked! Now live in a gated community with property staff that does all that. What a relief to the achin' back! After selling the land I was finally able to devote more time to the web! Whew!

I was a graphic artist and when I moved to computers the software that I had only had 30 fonts. So I worked to add 100 new fonts by vectorising truetype fonts to be compatible. Needless to say that took a long time and I was not impressed when those fonts were stolen from my computer and sold to the software maker. I lost my competitive edge and my eyes were opened to plagiarism and to never trust software/computer technicians ever again.

By then I was comfortable at the computer and started contributing add-ons for a CMS and eventually write my own CMS. I was able to customise a forum solution for my sporting association who then became the first to provide a forum for members in the country. But moderating that forum became a chore as there were 2 members in particular who were tacking silly comments onto every post. I was never sure if they were competing for "top poster" but I did see a lot of it turn into "forum-rage". Like road-rage, there is no end to it until one gets suspended. Even though I was not the moderator, just the developer, I did get blamed for removing posts and banning members.

Those 2 trouble makers are actually well known to me and since that association banned forums many years ago, nothing about the forum was ever discussed at the sport meets. That is until a couple of years and ago, when I heard from the horse's mouths of how proud they were of their behaviour and that they challenged the man behind it all.

Today I avoid forums, except for a couple like this one where troublemakers are quickly outed.

The computer can be an outlet for many things including research, education, amusement and an income.

But at what stage does it become an addiction?

Bad actors are a fact of life. Some have ideologies, some are just obtuse for the sake of being obtuse. Most times ignoring is the best path. Addiction, however, is an obsessive compulsive behavior. Are we (youse and meese) obsessive?

Could be. :)
