I recently joined to send a message to someone, about 2 weeks ago. I had an account years ago, but it was apparently purged. I get an email today informing me I've been suspended, oh the horror. The only thing I did with this account in the last 2 weeks was delete a notification today from Facebook about adding friends or whatever and only because they kept sending me emails about it . They have an option to disagree with suspension and I get to this page:

Upload a photo of yourself
Upload a photo that clearly shows your face. Make sure the photo is well-lit and isn't blurry. Don't include other people in the shot.
We use this photo to help us check that this account belongs to you. We'll delete the photo once we've done this, and it will never appear on your profile.

... and yes I was double checking the URL's. It's legit.... what a joke. I was half tempted to send them a picture of my middle finger.

I've seen so many services wanting photo ID these days, especially where there may be financial transactions, so no surprise there.

With so many scammers on FB they just put up any picture and don't care if the account gets nuked.

If anyone cares about being on FB they will follow its rules.

They didn't ask for photo ID, they asked for an image of my face. If they had asked for a copy of my ID it would of been even more laughable.

I realize they have the marketplace and verification of accounts for using that should have higher level but I wasn't using those services.

Lastly I'm not even sure what rule I broke or could of broke. It's just vaguely worded as "Breaking the Community Guidelines". The only thing I was communicate to an old friend.

My mantra for the 2020s:

Protocols not Platforms

It's not too soon to start burying the 2010s web.

The last thing we need is the "centralised platform" web of the 2010s on nitro-boosters.

I know the pre-Web 2.0, dial-up world wide web of the 1990s was clunky and slow and disjointed and random. I know we didn't have the technology or the speed or billions of users.

But some of its underlying principles were absolutely right.

Didn't Facebook ask for naked photos at one time to protect you from people posting your naked photos?

Anyway - Mr Zuckerberg has spoken at length about why facial images are needed, it has to do with "global trust". It's part of the direction Meta is going in with their metaverse. He expects the future will have digital "global IDs" that include facial recognition as part of your digital "passport", so you can prove who you are online. It's shocking at first but Meta is trying to spearhead the change. You don't have to submit anything but you won't be able to join the "community" until you do, he says.

Decisions decisions!

I pity that dog, though.

Mr Zuckerberg has spoken at length ...

I think Mr. Zuckerberg is following the script laid out in Dave Eggers prescient book, The Circle, which unknowingly predicted some of the horrors of the Metaverse.

The book is a bit long and the ending is almost predictable, but still a good read.

Kind of like "papers, please" ... then again, the anonymous web has been so horribly abused by bad actors it is no wonder that mainstream (and governments!) want to know "who said what and when".
