My girlfriend uses an iPhone, and uses the default Mail app to IMAP to her Gmail. About 2 weeks ago it just stopped working, throwing an error of "no password provided".
I went through all of the usual steps, ensuring that all of the settings were right. Then I googled and found others with the same problem, and the nuclear option was to delete the account and recreate it. But that also didn't work.
I went to a chat session today with Google, and the tech there could only offer the same suggestions that I'd already tried. But then I stumbled across the solution, and wanted to share in case others have the same problem.
To help keep your account more secure, from May 30, 2022, Google no longer supports the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password.

Knowing the problem, I was able to find the solution.
1. Go to [
myaccount.google.com...]
2. Click on "Security"
3. Click on "App passwords"
4. Log in to your Google account again
5. Generate a password for the specific app and device that you're trying to use
6. Go to that device, and replace your real password with the 16 digit one that Google assigned in step 5. I included the whitespaces, but I don't know for sure that it's necessary
That worked for me, so I hope it helps others!
