Yes, it seems the prediction for the WWDC was wrong.
There are many reasons why not, including the loss of income from payments of $15 billion from Google. That income would have to be replaced, plus the cost of operating a search engine. Would the company earn that from its users, and from launching a search service. Apple has very deep pockets, but it's probably hit its bottom line immediately.
