This video is popular but we won't show it to you

I'm seeing a message that says "this video is popular" on youtube videos followed by "but we can't show it to you because we don't know much about this creator yet. To see it you must log in and follow the channel".

My reaction is - I have a brain, just show me the video and let me decide these things. Oddly, for me, it's all of the trucker videos from the 10's of thousands of "Freedom Convoy" protestors in Canada showing this right now. Must be an error right?

<sigh>

This is why protocols are better than platforms.

Alice wants to publish a video. Bob wants to watch Alice's video.

Ian, the Intermediary (in case YouTube) wants to decide whether Alice can publish a video and whether Bob can watch it.

Who the hell is Ian?

If neither Alice nor Bob pay attention to Ian, then Alice can publish the video and Bob can watch it.

When YouTube started (in Feb 2005):

- there was no HTML5
- the HTML5 <video> element did not yet exist
- playing videos on a webpage required a plugin like Adobe Flash Player

None of those things have been true for a very long time now.

Roll on web3.

Just log in, and that is exactly what you will be able to do. If they don't know whether a video has Adult Only content * they will assume it does until they learn otherwise.

* I first met the login requirement when someone sent me a link to something by philologist Hot For Words. Nothing inherently naughty, just, well...
