The UK are thinking of charging a fee (per mile) driven by UK drivers using GPS. I find this amusing as they cant even get a first class letter delivered on time - after many years of trying!. How on earth do they think they can manage a GPS mileage tracking database?

Answers on a postcard (that will arrive late in the UK) to "silly ideas in the UK".

Perhaps they will work out how to run a monopoly without giving in to competition?

Certainly doesn't seem workable.

I am all for taxes the other person pays, and I use GPS, but I am in the US :)

I know that some people here certainly can't handle the state sales tax laws.

In my state - adult diapers are tax exempt while baby diapers are not. 9% or less fruit juice is taxed while 10% or greater is not.

I don't think these are done very effectively. The average clerk has no clue and I doubt charging for GPS will be very effective either.

This isn't as impossible as you might think.

Two years ago I was involved in a project where an insurance company wanted to charge car insurance by usage for private vehicles (verses commercial trucks).

The system was a GPS & cell phone which tracked speed and location. Periodically the cell phone dialed out and dumped the info into a central system. The insurance then was adjusted to reflect speed of vehicle in specific speed zones, milage, and location by crime rate.

Turns out they would have got less money then as today so it was dropped, but not before we tested it Texas.

As a final note, fleets (a group of cars, trucks or vehicles managed and owned by one company and under one insurance plan) already have such system built into them.

Not just that, truckers in the US are charged according to the milage they do in each state...

So... Big Brother is watching, and charging...
