[news.bbc.co.uk...]

(if the terms are met - but given that Laporta's popularity has more than doubled since he claimed he'd buy Beckham, it could well be sealed already).

<from England>

David Beckham is our equivilent of "Big Bird" from Sesame Street.

But with less ability to teach kids stuff and more ability with his feet.

Well I am Manchester based, and support MU when they are winning;) (the rest of the time I support Bolton - or is it the other way round - same difference I suppose)

Its best for MU that they get rid now - they will never get a better price, and he is not going to improve any from here on in.

They can buy 2 or 3 world class players for the money they will get for him (or 5 or 6 Arsenal players;)).

TJ, lol! agreed, but he is running from his country.

I expect to see him on "a question of sport" and being a pundit in about 2-3 years.

It's the money men again.... they've been running United for years. To be honest I'd be totally sick if I was a United fan.

By the way, and the media always overlook this... Beckham has played for United, England and who?

You got it: Preston North End FC. The first winners of the league, only team to win the double without losing a match, etc etc. Try to match that United!

Beckham was sheer class at Preston. We only had him for 4 weeks and were expecting an arrogant, selfish dribbler when he arrived. How wrong we were. It was clear then he was destined for great things.

Frankly, he's better off away from United. The sooner the better.

Beck who?

Wasn't he some late 90's folk/rock singer? I didn't know he'd moved to the UK...

hehehehe

(no, no... I DO know who he is. I just couldn't care less, that's all...)

OK - If we are going for interesting Beckham facts - did you know that he almost signed for Norwich? when he was a nipper....

Unfortunately - snapped up by Manchester Utd instead :(

Shames for us Canaries.

Ps - You can keep David Healy ;)

I did a little informal poll today. One person out of 41 people I asked knew of the Beckham character. One.

I asked 30 guys and 11 women. (the waitress at the Olive Gardens was the only person that had heard of him, she is recently from Chile)

Beckham doesn't seem to have much market penetration over here 'cross the pond. 2 people out of 41 knew what "naff" meant. :)

digitalhost, did you also ask those people if they knew what soccer is?

You should try asking here in Europe about some NFL or baseball star, you'd get a similar result. NHL and NBA are better known, but NBA only since about 10-15 years.

United are after £30 million for him

He has to go either this summer or next year before he is out of contract and leaves on a free transfer due to the "good old bosman" rule

"bosman rule"
the best ways to get top players since you don’t have to pay anything for them except signing on fees and their wages

Hopefully when he has gone we can get back to normally with intelligent reading from the UK's daily newspapers instead of pictures of the beckhams out shopping etc (So Boring)

>> What are these? - are these types of programming languages? <<

Sadly, reality is that programming languages are more interesting. They're what our mates over the pond laughably call 'sports'... the bits they put on TV between the adverts.

Oh... I suppose I should add IMHO so I don't upset anybody.

By the way, Beckham recently told a North End fan (allegedly) that he wouldn't mind returning to Deepdale later in his career. Well... I am allowed to dream aren't I?
