[news.bbc.co.uk...]

(if the terms are met - but given that Laporta's popularity has more than doubled since he claimed he'd buy Beckham, it could well be sealed already).

And try asking an Yank about cricket or rugby...

Mind you, even though I have been a couple of times to the US, been to a couple of baseball games. I can't name more than a couple of baseball players (like Corky Sosa), and the game YOU call football is a complete mystery to me.... A mystery why anyone likes it!

Re: Beckham. Man Utd are doing it for the money, but they should be careful not to lose many fans who support them just because of Beckham. In many ways he IS the team.

On that account, try asking anyone outside the Commonwealth about cricket... Couldn't name even 1 player or team (except national teams, of course, although I don't know which ones are good).

Only baseball player I know of is this Di Maggio guy, probably only because he was married to Marilyn Monroe...

Re ManU/Beckham I don't think ManU would loose many supporters in Europe, they have enough other well-known players, Solskjaer, van Nistelrooy, Barthez, Veron to name but a few. The first 3 would at least guarantee following from their home countries.

I think Man U would lose a LOT of supporters in Asia. In Thailand, his picture is everywhere and he endorses all kinds of products from drinks to motor oil. There is a battle royale here between clubs like Man U and Liverpool (with their icon, Michael Owen), and I could see many supporters in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia etc. ditching their "Beckham" shirts or rushing out to buy the new "Beckham" shirts.
If he moves, it will be interesting to see how he fares. Very few English players have done well in Europe in the past. It must be hard as they can't get a decent pint after training.

Hargreaves - Bayern Munich
Mc Manaman - Real Madrid

are the only ones that come to my mind right now.

Didnt Kevin Keegan win European footballer of the year twice with Hamburg in 1978 and then in 1979, he was the last one to do well.

There are a few others of course:

In 1956 it was Stanley Matthews with Blackpool of all places, and then Dennis Law in '64 and Bobby Charlton in 66 and then George Best in 68 all with MAN U.

Good bless Google ;)

I think it will be a tradegy if the Beckham's Leave for the continent - they are a national treasure and an instition and I love em! They keep up our eccentric end.

I am going to start a (one man) Campaign - To keep the Beckham's in England.

It'll be like the Keep the pound British.(not that I oppose this you understand)

If I manage it I'll campaign for a "Royal Beckham Day" when we can all dress up up like t***s and watch reruns of Englands victories and have special events all over the country where people can kick boots at his effigy :)

on a less (or more?) humurous note: Man united are absolutely right to sell - they need the money - Modern footie is a business - Furgy could get 4 decent prodigy's and a brazilian for 30m problem is it could effect Dave's England career - he carried us nearly single handedly into the world cup and has more to show internationally IMVHO.

> David Beckham is our equivilent of "Big Bird"
> from Sesame Street.

Sounds a whole lot more like your equiv of Michael Jordan or Muhammad Ali. Some of the stats they talk about his world notoriety are starting to give Ali, The Beatles, and Elvis a run for their place in history.

What do you expect from a team that looses against the Aussies? :)

Not that I do not appreciate Australians in general, but football (or soccer) is not really their domain...

>>digitalGhost, did you also ask those people if they knew what soccer is

I'm pretty sure they all know what soccer is. I didn't ask, but I'm confident in my assessment. ;) I asked some people today if they knew who Pele was. All of them did. Everyone knows what Cricket and Rugby are, no one I talked to today can name any of the players but they are aware of the game.

I'm not trying to assess the validity of the games or the players, I'm just fascinated by what people don't know about other countries and their athletes. It's as hard for people here to imagine that people in the U.K. might have never heard of Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron as it is for you Brits to realize that this Beckham guy isn't a household name here.

I'm also still wondering if the movie "Free Willy" didn't get more than a few chuckles when it appeared in the U.K. One of my friends is from from Farmingham and he thought the title was humorous. ;) If you type Farmingham England into Google by the way, Google wants to know if you mean "Framingham"...

Timely article [news.excite.com] that came out today about "Posh and Becks" lack of popularity in the US.

Friday, the Beckhams are ending a three week America visit aimed at boosting their star here.

But Posh and Becks are still greeted with vague looks in America, where soccer is a game most associated with young girls and women and the Spice Girls are yesterday's fad.

Just goes to show that you can be a big star in your own country but its very hard to make it in the US.

I have read that they have been paid a million UK pounds a day for this latest tour (well US visit)

I don't think you can put beckham in the same league as Ali The Beatles or Elvis, these guys are "megastars" and have given pleasure to millions of people around the world for 25 - 30 years plus.

His name may be at the top of the keyword search today but where will it be in a couple of years time

I chalk it up to incompetent promotion, beyond American uninterest in world soccer. My roommate and several friends follow the premiership, but we were all completely unaware that they were in the country.

"3 good players"

Apparently there has been talk of a move by Ronaldinho to Man U. for a cool 10 million. How is that for a sweet deal. Damn Man U. Bloody despise them. Although I am a big fan of Scholes and Van the man.

P.S. Arsenal Fan here. Dissapointed as Abbiatti declined a move to us. Dammit.

Figo will be going to Italy I believe as a Figo/Beckham role will not work.
Real are already saturated with superstars!

To be honest Figo is better than Beckham anyways.

And as for the new Barca President, what a fake.
