Hello everyone! Ive been away for a while. I'm in the Royal Air Force and had a foreign posting for a few months and I'm back in Good ol' Blighty now. Safe and sound with all fingers and toes in tact I'm glad to report.

I've been given the task of sorting out the music playlist for the bar I work part-time in during the day time. During the summer we only have DJ's between 8pm-12am on a Thursday-Sunday, so we'll need 12 hours of music for Monday - Wednesday and 8 hours for Thursday - Sunday.

This means I need a LOT of songs. I've got a few ideas of some decent tracks but considering I need to fill about 68hours of airtime I need some help. Genre's allowed for this bar are any common types of music really. This bar is in England, so country and western isn't really appropriate and also songs in native languages/styles from other countries are also inappropriate. So, hit me with ideas ...

Some of the things I've come up with so far are:

  • Smokey Robinson - Have you seen her
  • Chris Isaac - Wicked Game
  • Lauryn Hill - I remember
  • Paul Simon - Mrs Robinson
  • Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
  • Guns and Roses - Knocking on Heavens Door
  • Jay Z - HArd Knock Life

Also, for the days that do have DJ's there are different styles of music that the DJ's play. So I think for a couple of hours before the DJ starts some music from that genre should be played. For example, on a Friday night we have a HipHop/RnB DJ, so stuff like Jay Z, Lauryn Hill could be played between 6-8pm on a Friday. On a Thursday and a Saturday we have "house" music DJ's. I'm a house DJ myself, so I can deal with that one, but any tunes from this genre that people suggest are more than welcome. Sunday is a breaks/beats/HipHop night. As I'm not really "with" this particular genre, I could do with a hand here especially. He plays stuff ranging from 50 Cent - In da club, the new R-Kelly Tune, right down to stuff from Carly Simon, and old school "Northern Soul" like that.

During the day, we're after "inoffensive", "easy to listen to" music as the bar operates more like a restaurant. So stuff from bands like Air and Morcheeba is a plan I came up with. However, hardcore Rock and genre's like that are inappropriate.

The bar itself is a trendy student-type bar in Manchester, England.

Any and all ideas are - as always - welcome.

    Thanks!

Hmmm, the hard rock 'ban' took away half of my ideas and I guess goth is no option either, so here goes the other half ;).

If you're looking for easy to listen music, you might try movie soundtracks, stuff like Vangelis (Chariots of Fire, 1492 - Conquest of Paradise). Also Enya (Orinoco Flow, parts of LOTR soundtrack).

As for the soundtracks (I guess the easiest way to add another 50 minutes ;-) ), you shouldn't miss the Quentin Tarantino movies' cds ('reservoir dogs','pulp fiction',etc.); 'good morning vietnam' ist also a great compilation.

    You rang?

There are some fantastic compilation CD's about featuring some *great* records. Also have a look at the Motown Greatest hits stuff.

Perfect audiance. Check out some of the TV ad soundtracks airing at the moment, Northern Soul is becoming hip once more.

    My favourite song:

"Open Up" - performed by Leftfield

    Open up. Now open up.
You lied. You faked. You cheated.
    You changed the stakes.
Magnet toss that pie in the sky.
    Unrehearsed. Let the bubbles burst.
All in all. A three-ring circus.
Of unity with parody. Tragedy or comedy.
    Probably publicity.
Open up. Make room for me.
Now open up. Make room for me.
    Lose myself inside your schemes.
    Go for the money, honey.
    Not the screen.
Be a movie star. Blah, blah, blah.
    Go the whole hog.
    Be bigger than God.
    Burn, Hollywood, burn.
    Taking down Tinsel Town.
    Burn Hollywood, burn.
    Burn down into the ground.
    Burn, Hollywood, burn.
    Burn, Hollywood, burn.
    Take down Tinsel Town.
    Burn down to the ground.
    Down into the ground.
    Burn...

Thank you as always. I found an awesome live version of Hotel California.

Sound tracks and TV commercial sound tracks are great ideas! Hadn't thought of them at all!
