Gmail will deliver just about any form of your email user name. You can use different forms to allow sorting in your email client. For example, (using your example) you could register at your bank using "jmy.last.name" and it would be delivered and allow all incoming email in that format to be sorted to a separate folder if you set up the filters to do that. They ignore caps and some other differences such as the period.

why would I get a banking email from
jrmylastname@gmail.com
1st I just deleted it then I got another to put a pin code. I checked the address and it was as above. Called the bank had last 4 digest of cc I could have actually done this person harm.

I always thought they ignored the period as well, but it doesn't always work that way.
my old email address was of the form firstsecond@gmail.com, but I was regularly getting emails to first.second@gmail.com.
this was for a bloke on the other side of the world.
I got his work schedules and a load of email receipts for the things he'd bought.
and the headers said they were correctly sent to first.second@gmail.com as well - but they still turned up in my inbox.

i suppose his email address might have been first.second1@gmail.com, or something, and he just forgot to put in the 1, in which case it would have come to me.

in the end it got me worried about security at my end, so i removed that email address from all my online accounts and changed my address to something else entirely

No, jrmylastname should not be considered the same as jmylastname, I did not see an example above with additional letters so I thought it was only broken up with . as in j.mylastname so in that case I think I'd want to change my email as well. Though imho, gmail should be doing a better job of account sorting on setup to make that impossible. Don't tell me that's gone AI now. I stopped using gmail for anything personal/financial myself.

Thanks for that heads up @londrum.

Happened to me too.

Got several for the same guy over a period of a few months as well as a couple for another variation. Some containing sensitive information.

"straight from the horse's mouth":
Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses [support.google.com]

my email
jmylastname
getting
j.mylastname
jmylastname1
and others

why would I get a banking email from
jrmylastname@gmail.com

not sure why the 2 highlighted examples went through...

Firstnamelastname on gmail has always been a problem.
I've been receiving other people's email for a long time and it's mostly down to errors from others, either guessing wrong, or submitting the wrong address.
Having said that some of the emails are sensitive, so it's a warning to all to make sure you get the adress 100% correct. It's a gold mine for identity theft if I were that way inclined.
I ended up using a more anonymous gmail, but retaining my original.

I'm glad I am not the only person experiencing this issue. I have always been told that the "." period within the email address makes no difference, yet I have been receiving emails over the years (some fairly sensitive) from firstnamesirname when I use firstname.sirname. for this reason, I will not use Gmail for sensitive emails.

I have received general emails, mortgage acceptance emails, doctor appointment confirmations and password reset requests (I could have done real harm with those)

Mack.

Presumably you would have just ended up resetting your own password, because both versions are your email address.

londrum, it was emails to reset passwords on other online services (not Gmail).
