I'm not sure that's good advice for the inexperienced ;)
You should also leave 'explorer' in that list well alone too. End-tasking some (badly written) programs can leave them in a state that they find it hard to recover from ;)
A safer measure (on most win systems) is to go to start>>run and type msconfig
You should see a tab saying 'startup' where you should be able to disable all the Norton entries. Reboot, run defrag, and when it's finished tick the norton items again. And while you're there disable all the unwanted crap that has built up :)
You can get some nifty standalone startup utlities (there's one on Mike Lin's homepage (google for it) I can recommend where you can safely stop programs from running at startup, then re-enable them.
One final thing - make sure you have turned off power saving/standby before you do the defrag.
P.S. If you have any routines that are set to run automatically, they will also interfere. I would check your scheduled tasks to make sure those are suspended until after the defrag. Check your Windows Update task if there is one. I think the default is something like check every 5 minutes! ;)
although what I do is run msconfig then click the selective box (under the general tab) and de select all the options, except ProcessWinStart.bat file you will need to restart your comp and you can then run scan disk and NAV/NIS 2003 without a hitch.
Add in - Once it is finished go back to the Start menu, run msconfig and then click on the normal box under the general tab. You then need to restart again and the comp is back to normal.
