Single person electric quad-copter:
SD-03 SkyDrive manned flight model [en.skydrive2020.com] in Japan.

Powered paragliding [en.m.wikipedia.org] is pure exhilaration, an autogyro [en.m.wikipedia.org] is sensible fun... now if a practical manned quad-copter, especially an electric one, can be developed...

Note: currently electric auto-gyros can only fly for about 30 minutes on a charge... so just an expensive toy... it would be loverly to get useful electric personal flying machines... drones are awesome but that’s just looking along not flying along aloft...

If they made them in cat sizes, no bird would be safe. But I must confess I am especially struck by the “Consept Model” about halfway down the page.

Two things that strike me about this:
1- We are currently living a planetary melt-down, the last thing we need is an even less efficient means of travel.
2- People (not including me of course!) have enough trouble "driving" in two dimensions, adding a third dimension to the daily commute seems like a recipe for disaster.

maybe something like this for a green alternatives.
pedal power:

Or in one dimension -> down.

In sci-fi there is typically some form of auto lane height enforcement; stacking vehicles under manual control in vertically separate lanes, given existing single 2-D verticality crash levels, would be bumper car demolition derby time. Even trained commercial aircraft pilots with ATC control have problems...

Just think the mayhem if, instead of commuting by car we all commuted by powered parasail, let alone gyrocopter or quad-copter... road rage would have nothing on flight rage. Crash boom bah carnage.

At a society level ‘flying cars’ present fundamental critical concerns. At a personal fun level, however :)

In my area on a clear day I can see the Rocky Mountains about a 100km (60 miles) away with perhaps a few thousand people in between. VFR and flying toys are no problem. Yes, I’m spoiled (because all ‘civilised’ amenities are only an hours flight away in ‘big cities’. Best of all worlds :)

Yes but then there is always someone that hacks the system. Case in point:

Looks nice. Just too bad it won't stay aloft longer than 5 minutes (at this time).

Sadly, there doesn't appear to be a trunk to do grocery shopping. (sigh)
