BBC Article.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (Weee) Directive makes electronics firms responsible for what happens to the gadgets and devices they produce once people have done with them.

The Weee directive forces hi-tech firms to find greener ways of making electronic goods and obliges them to help recycle what they make once they are discarded.

The Weee directive comes into force in the UK in early 2008.

They only started planning it in the early '90s as well. And they said the EU was too bureaucratic...

Now wait until they get a similar directive through in the EU. I think we will not be alive any more then. Probably the kids will ask wat a dumpster is. And what beer is ;).

I think this is actually is an EU initiative. I'm sure the great efficency of the British government could have seen it done in under a decade :)

Hush! Brewing in one form or another has been around since prehistoric man accidentally let some clay jars of grain get wet and sit too long. We're still working on perfecting it.

(Maybe if we put as much passion into desigining electronics, we could have them twice as fast and fully biodegradable in five years. ;) )

Yeesh - talk about planned obsolesence. One of the machines in the room with me turns 11 some time this year, and I'd still rather use it as a terminal than feed it to my plants. ;)

Well, maybe you'd have to spray an enzyme activator on the hardware before it started breaking down... or something like that. ;)

As an out of work electronics tech (I'm currently driving autoparts again), it's so depressing to see this "disposable" technology gain a foothold.

An example of how they built them "back then" is in this little radio (see link below). I also have this same radio, tube included, and when properly hooked up, it still runs!

Bet nothing of today's technology will even come close to that kind of lifespan!

I remember when "dumpster diving" was something only real hackers and phonephreaks did. Sorry to see the term applied to some odd green movement.
