With the plethora of storage choices to feed a hungry Canon S50 - which offers the best value AND is the fastest? A Compact Flash card or Microdrive? Get two 128mb or one 256mb? My budget is around the £50-60 mark....

Personally, I'd be tempted to splurge on the 1gb microdrive if I had a CF compatible camera... Just because it's so cool to think about an actual 'spinning platter' style drive that tiny. ;)

But for your budget, it seems like the microdrives might be too pricy? Or have the prices gone down since the last time I looked?

I would go with the 256mb over the 2 128mb. It will be much easier to transfer to your computer off of one disk.

As for the microdrive, make sure it is compatible with your camera. Also I think they may consume more power than the compact flash card. You should also keep in mind the moving parts, which are more likely to break.

If your camera can handle it, get the microdrive. I have the Fuji FinePix S2, it can shoot pictures up to 4256x2848. I never run out of space on microdrive...
