  • Every year or so, often, sadly, when one of our forum colleagues dies, there is a flurry of threads on how best to ensure ones web properties aren’t locked away and lost to heirs.

With Covid-19’s reach and increased hazards for the older and those with a variety of health conditions it is time once again to recommend that not only we webdevs but our family members and business associates have ready a ‘when I die file’.

Notes regarding and copies of legal documents detailing real and digital properties, financial records, personal effects and preferences, etc. should all be organized ready should the worse occur.

The shock and sorrow of losing a loved one should never have the unnecessary burden of not knowing what is where and what to do with each. They (or you) are in no condition to best make sense of someone else’s chaotic affairs.

I used to ignore this sort of stuff, didn’t even have a will, until my father died. Then my mother died naming me executor and all prior posts on the subject finally got through my thick skull. Now I have my own ‘when I die file’ that is updated annually with advice from my accountant and solicitor who each hold copies.

My kids have wills and seem to expect me to take care of grandkids and things if they die - a generational twist on reality, takes denial to a whole new level; hey kids I’m most likely to go first.

Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
However, do not be a self centred ass, don’t add misery to mourners grief. Make it hard for death and easy for family.

That said, to you, each and all: life, health, and joy.

Besides having all documents and other information stored in a convenient place, it is also a good practice to have your web properties organized in a way that they don't need immediate attention.

Paying domains and hosting well in advance and having the money streams directed to a legal entity like an LLC, instead of to a sole proprietorship, gives the people taking care of the inheritance time to sort everything out properly, without a sudden shutdown of the income stream.
