The Internet Archive has suspended its waiting list for access to the books in its lending library, and has created a special National Emergency Library.

During the waitlist suspension, users will be able to borrow books from the National Emergency Library without joining a waitlist, ensuring that students will have access to assigned readings and library materials that the Internet Archive has digitized for the remainder of the US academic calendar, and that people who cannot physically access their local libraries because of closure or self-quarantine can continue to read and thrive during this time of crisis, keeping themselves and others safe.

Better yet: This applies only to the copyrighted material in TIA's lending library. Public-domain works (generally published no later than 1924 in the US) have always been fully available to everyone all the time, not only at TIA but at other places such as Hathi Trust [hathitrust.org] (most material scanned by Google), the Biodiversity Heritage Library [biodiversitylibrary.org] (most material from TIA, but entirely different user interface), and other still-more-niche sources. The human-curated Online Books Page [onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu] operated by Penn has other good links, including periodicals.
