Psst! Kiwis! What does it look like over there in 2020?

I don't do New Year's resolutions, because the very idea is silly: If you feel you need to change something about yourself, change it right now and don’t put it off until some arbitrary future date.

But I do have New Year’s Plans. This year it involves {extremely famous 18th-century novel that everyone has heard of but most people won’t admit to having read}. Some months ago I bought a 19th-century--i.e. public domain--illustrated edition for a respectable but not at all outrageous price, with the intention of putting it online. But it had to be deferred while I polished off assorted other novels, notably {equally famous 19th-century novel which everyone has heard of but nobody bothers to read} which is nominally about a girl in her early teens who finds herself not only homeless but the sole support of her grandfather, a compulsive gambler with an ever-more-tenuous grasp on reality. It does not end well.*

So at some time in the near future I get to start photographing pages--the scanner takes ages and will be reserved for the ten** remaining illustrations--and running OCR and proofreading. Happily, being a newer edition I won’t have to contend with long esses. (I recently finished one whose OCR could not distinguish among “insect” “infest” and “infect”. Unfortunately it was a book about biology.)

* Not even in the sense of “The good ended happily; the bad ended unhappily. That is what Fiction means.”
** There were twelve, but the other two have presumably wound up adorning a locker somewhere.

I suspect, for some, it's a meaningful time to set a date to start the process. However, I agree, do it any time of the year.

Happy New Year everyone!

As resetting a server to 1970:01:01:00:00:00 didn’t actually reset my life when I gave it a try back at the start of the millennium I shall do what I do every year: just keep putting one step in front of the other and enjoy the journey...

Best wishes to fellow travellers during the coming orbital period.

Round, round we go
Round, round we go
Oh, darling darling
Each day's a new day
A change in the weather
But darling darling
Each mood is a new one
Nothing remains the same
— Frank Ludwig. Trooper.

That can make you dizzy if you aren't careful. Happy new year to all and a better year than the other ones you've had.

Bah Hum--- er... Happy New Year! (I sometimes get confused!)

Expect to see changes in the web landscape in 2020. Hopefully some of those changes will actually be beneficial!

Meanwhile, as a once semi-famous cartoonist used to scribble: "Keep on Truckin'!"

Today I Learned ...

That some of my log-wrangling scripts use the locution 201\d. I’ve just finished globally changing them. (To 20\d\d so I won't have to do it all over again in just ten years' time.)

I was leaving Auckland, NZ on 1/1 and it was hazy throughout NZ owing to the deadly fires in SE Australia. I flew over the smoke cloud and saw some reddish-brown smoke patches in the fire zone, but not the fires. It was crystal clear when the plane landed in Melbourne. I hope those people get some rain.
