Most of us here already know that smart devices are a risk, unless properly protected.

In this latest report, a hacker was found to be chatting to a youngster on the smart camera.

I don't know the full detail, but it seems odd to me that there is not better securioty on these smart devices in the first place.
I would imagine, in part, it's a cost issue and putting much better security on the devices will put the cost up. But, i'd argue that it would be better to be more expensive than open to hacking.

Making it easier to connect is probably worse from a security possibility. To difficult and the product would be returned.

Also, who's responsible for security, is it the user, or the manufacturer?

Responsible, user. Potentially liable, manufacturer.

Seems like a good place for a "hackability scale" or rating from an independent third party. Manufacturers could make models with different levels of security vs ease of use.
