Another bastion of competence, literacy, and propriety has fallen to the education vagaries of the wild colonial mob:

With regret I have to announce that, after some 18 years, I have decided to close the Apostrophe Protection Society.

There are two reasons for this. One is that at 96 I am cutting back on my commitments and the second is that fewer organisations and individuals are now caring about the correct use of the apostrophe in the English Language.

We, and our many supporters worldwide, have done our best but the ignorance and laziness present in modern times have won!

This web site, [apostrophe.org.uk] masterminded by John Hale, will however remain open for some time for reference and interest.

Yes, I wanted to show someone how their misuse of the apostrophe had decimated the supply, but it's too late.

One of our local librarians--now alas deceased--used to go around with a white-out marker in order to obliterate grocer’s apo’strophe’s wherever and whenever she found them.

The site is running again with a message that it won't close down, but that it is unlikely that it will be developed very much further.

This site is so nineties. Brings my memory back to the good old times when the Internet was dominated by mom-and-pop sites and when Geocities was the place to go for real authoritative information :)
