The Retadup wormable malware was responsible for mining cryptocurrencies, and French police managed to use a flaw in the command and control server to disable the malware, and to turn it into disinfection software.
"The disinfection server responded to incoming bot requests with a specific response that caused connected pieces of the malware to self-destruct," Avast representative Jan Vojtěšek said in the post. "At the time of publishing this article, the collaboration has neutralized over 850,000 unique infections of Retadup."

ě = e-hacek (what the unicode consortium in its infinite wisdom calls a “caron”), in case anyone wondered. Yup, the poor guy has two consecutive haceks in his name.

Fun fact: š is one of a handful of characters that are in the Windows charset but not the Mac charset. (There are, of course, an equal number going the opposite way.)
