A DDoS attack carried out by a Utah man between 2013 and 2014 has resulted in a jail sentence of 27 months, and a $95,000 fine, says Southern California Department of Justice.
The defendant was also ordered to pay $95,000 in restitution to one of the victims - Daybreak Games, formerly Sony Online Entertainment.

typically used the Twitter account /.../ to announce that an attack was imminent and then posted “scalps” /.../ after the attack.

Smart guy .

I wonder what was his motivation, and how much it has cost him to run the DDos (I guess that, to take down these game servers, it was not just a matter of pressing F5 frenetically).

Free accounts logging in and out continuously via script has brought down login servers many-a-time. It's a problem with free games that have pay to win shops. That's probably why they made an example of him.
