I’ve got a recent headscratcher that I’m sure someone hereabouts can elucidate.

I do not personally use gmail, but plenty of the people I correspond with do. Recently I’ve noticed this phenomenon at least three separate times, with at least two different people.

1. I send an email that happens to include two images in different sizes and shapes (I edit everything, because nobody needs the full 6000x4000 that came out of my camera)
2. Person replies to me, presumably using the default Reply function. In this reply, there is
a. Icon indicating an attachment, as when they are sending me a picture
b. Text of my original mail, containing two outlined blank spaces where my included images were, in their original sizes and shapes
c. Two copies of one of my original pictures (variously the first or the second).

What gives? (I'm told there was a recent change in email, but I was told this by a non-computer-knowledgable person so I don't know whether the change was in gmail-as-a-whole, or in her android's email function.)

has anyone tried comparing the gmail app on a mobile device vs an email client (such as thunderbird) vs gmail.com on a web browser?
