While large chunks of the US used this year's Snowmageddon to binge on streaming TV or tweet selfies with snowmen, take a moment to remember the Great Blizzard of 1978, which led to the first Bulletin Board Service (BBS) taking to the phone lines 41 years ago.

Whew! Been there done that, from 1982-1997. Actually made a little money along the way. Those were the days. :)

That's really early BBS.
My BBS was relatively late at 1986-ish (can't remember the exact date).

Yes, those were the days.

FWIW 'telnet bbs' is a good search term for this thread.

If you like Reddit /r/bbs, you might also like /r/telnet too.

A friend on mine received a C-64 for Christmas, 82 or 83. It had this very odd looking tape deck with it. :P I ended up getting one later that year. He ended up with modem at some point and was running a BBS from it, I never managed to convince Dad to get the modem for myself. My friend was truly a genius and last I heard was someone big at Netflix. I was in Kansas visiting family friends with my Mother and one of the kids there had a modem, we were communicating with my friend on his BBS back in PA. I could only imagine what the phone bill was. That is the first time I can recall using a computer to communicate with another one.

I finished my BBS with 8 lines, all 56k and milked that one more year before giving up (the net was starting to take off at the time ... 1998-9) and fully moved to the web and concentrated on SITE rather than ACCESS (and subscriptions). Made a difference ... and left me with a host of "expensive junk" that had no further use. Sigh. What I didn't sell off I eventually threw away sometime in 2002.
