ok, so this is in foo ... as i'm not looking to get into games development, just fun!

i've never really played computer games - hard to believe but true!

a bit of background - i can write pretty efficient, complex and long sql transactions (and other nerdy stuff) but my cellphone often confuses me!

... i've some evening time on my hands and i'd like to let go and escape for a bit (without getting trashed one way or another!)

do i need to buy myself a games console? or is my computer good enough? (my computer is used for webdev and video editing, so is reasonably powerful)

also , i did try a few years ago and i bought some kind of war/battle game but it was so compliated i gave up on it!

i love strategy but also tbh i want something straightforward and easy for an inexperienced adult to play. Also everything seems to be online multiplayer games ... i'm not against that in fact i'd probably like that ... except i'd like to be able to develop at least a basic skill level before getting involved with online players.

any ideas? / thoughts?

Things have changed.

Nowadays there is incredible free games for free for both computer and consoles.
Go to Steam (store.steampowered.com) and search for free to play games; there are thousands of games for every taste around the world.

I play some hours a week to Warface, a first person shooter where you can be "killed" once and again and "reborn" instantly until you learn how to survive (a few minutes until a no-life-but-console guy blows your head). :-)

Watch "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch" if you haven't yet or have some free time. Then reevaluate. ;)

Do you have specific type of game in mind? First Person Shooter, Simulation, etc? That may help you eliminate certain types of games in order to focus on a specific genre.

yes i think i'm not really into simulation ... i thinkfirst person shooter i've never done but it seems it would be a good stress reliever!
... mostly i like strategy type games if there are such a thing.

We don't need another chess game ... but don't forget the oldies!

Games are pretty well saturated with endless versions of the same thing so "cute" or "compelling" are about all that is left to make a mark.

Came back to see if there were any other replies ...

Will just add that "game theory" is as complicated as anything else and one needs to be "bent" that way to undertake it.
