PETA calls for fish friendly Swedish street signage
Today is World Ocean Day! To celebrate, PETA has asked Mayor of Stockholm, Karin Wanngård, to maybe change a street name to something a bit more fish-friendly.

Fiskargatan, or "Fisherman's Street" in Södermalm comes in for stick, with the animal rights organisation suggesting that "Fish Are Friends Street" would better, promoting "kindness and respect rather than the mass killing of sensitive sea animals."

Can't make this stuff up.

Meanwhile, another group of activists will be complaining about the gender-specific title of the street name...

Seems like a pretty low-key suggestion, not a big deal, and certainly not headline news IMO, but then it came from The Register, which is about one step up from a tabloid rag sometimes.

If we did not have tabloid rags, or outfits like PETA, where would our daily dose of humor come from?

the gender-specific title of the street name
No, that's the translation’s fault. “Fiskar” is not inherently gendered. In years past, it may have been assumed to be male, requiring “fiskarin” for a fisherwoman, but today that’s probably on a par with “poetess”.

I actually like The Register. They write some great stories, but sometime I have to double check to make sure I'm not reading The Onion.

Agreed. There's times I'm reading a thread on WW and wonder the same thing!. :)

PETA also wants to rename "fish" to be "sea kittens", they think we'll be less likely then to kill and eat them:

Campaign to call them Sea Kittens was announced in 2009.

Hey, works for me... as long as we keep "RhinoFish" :)
